The Spiritual Work of the United Nations and the Liberation of Humanity
Ceaseless and Undaunted Striving to Lessen and Eliminate Planetary
Suffering at the United Nations
Only the ignorant assume that celestial harps will sound at the first request. From the abyss of chaos to celestial harmony the way is indeed long. This is why the Great Teachers are also the Great Toilers, and only those who have heard both extremes can judge the extent of this evolution.
Supermundane I, par. 152, Agni Yoga Society, New York, NY
The mission of the United Nations’ Office for the Coordination of Human Affairs (OCHA) is to mobilise and coordinate effective and principled humanitarian action in partnership with national and international actors in order to alleviate human suffering in disasters and emergencies, advocate for the rights of people in need, promote preparedness and prevention, and facilitate sustainable solutions.
On 19 August of this year and for the first time ever, the international community paid tribute to the brave humanitarian workers who devote their time and energy to come to the rescue of innocent victims of war and natural disasters throughout the world. This date, designated by the UN General Assembly as World Humanitarian Day, commemorates the day six years ago when a bomb attack in Baghdad killed 22 United Nations employees. Among those who were killed was Sergio Vieira de Mello, the then UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Under-Secretary-General of OCHA from 1998 to 2001 and longtime humanitarian.
This year’s observance of World Humanitarian Day is part of the UN’s long history and ceaseless focus on humanitarian efforts and concerns.
As the OCHA website indicates, the environment where humanitarian action globally takes place is evolving rapidly and it continually poses new challenges to the humanitarian community. There is increasing human vulnerability in crisis situations both in natural disasters and in complex emergencies.
Reflecting on such ceaseless strivings to lessen planetary suffering and aware of the countless lives who yet yearn for aid and succor, and who silently endure, in spite of such global efforts, it is understandable that sometimes, hopelessness and overwhelm can overtake the servants of humanity.
Dag Hammarskjöld, the second and most famous of the UN Secretaries-General reflected on a similar point while addressing the American Association for the United Nations on 14 September 1953. In his address, he quotes the Chinese poet philosopher, Tao Tse-Tung who stated, "whoever wants to grip the world and shape it will fail, because the world is a spiritual thing that cannot be shaped." (In the book, To Speak for the World, Speeches and Statements by Dag Hammarskjöld, Secretary-General of the United Nations 1953-1961.) Mr. Hammarskjöld continued,
"As individuals and as groups we can put our influence to the best of our understanding and ability on the side of what we believe is right and true. We can help in the movement toward those ends that inspire our lives and are shared by all men of good will—in terms very close to those of the Charter of the United Nations—peace and freedom for all, in a world of equal rights for all."
Such ponderings reflect the energies of the sun sign Virgo currently influencing our planet. It is under the influences of this sign that the depths, darkness, quiet and warmth of the inner life is discovered and eventually brought to light. In the words of the esoteric wisdom, Virgo
"is the place of slow, gentle and yet powerful crises and periodic developments which take place in the dark and yet which lead to light. It is the 'blinded stage,' which is found in Masonic rituals and which ever precedes the gift of light. Virgo stands for the 'womb of time' wherein God's plan (the mystery and the secret of the ages) is slowly matured and—with pain and discomfort and through struggle and conflict—brought into manifestation at the end of the appointed time." (Esoteric Astrology, p. 260)
In Virgo, the purpose for which form life exists begins to be realized and the desire for personality satisfaction begins to yield to the desire for interior recognition and the indwelling spiritual life begins to assume increasing control until the inner spiritual reality is eventually released from the thralldom of matter.
We invite those of you who live in the New York City area for group meditation on Friday, 4 September in the United Nations Meditation Room to contribute to the worldwide effort undertaken by many at this time of the month to aid in the revelation of the mystery and the secret of the ages. Using the meditation outline, "The Spiritual Work of the United Nations and the Liberation of Humanity," we will there meet for silent meditation from Noon until 12:30 p.m. Discussion will follow outside the Meditation Room from 12:30—1:15 p.m.
As in the past, we invite those of you who live outside the New York City area to contribute to this work of planetary redemption through the power of focused meditation, using the above meditation outline, not only on Friday, September 4th, but weekly, every Friday. Please feel free to request a copy of the meditation outline, if you need it.
This is an especially auspicious opportunity because the Sixty-Fourth Session of the UN General Assembly (physically located above the UN Meditation Room) will convene at United Nations Headquarters on Tuesday, 15 September 2009, at 3 p.m. According to Rule 62 of the rules of procedure the President of the General Assembly will invite the representatives of Member States to observe one minute of silence dedicated to prayer or meditation.
Seeking to infuse the General Assembly with the energies of Light, Love and the Will-to-Good as it takes up its healing planetary work, we ask for your subjective support of the short video (4:30) recently posted on YouTube featuring the Great Invocation and photos of the UN General Assembly and the UN Meditation Room under the theme of Reconciliation and the Healing of the Nations. (If the video does not play smoothly on your computer, allow it to silently load, while you do something else and then, hit "replay.")
If you would like either a CD-Rom or DVD of this video for your own use, please write to email@example.com and we will look into replicating it.
We also want to take this opportunity to mention the many activities now being planned to observe the United Nations International Day of Peace, on September 21, first proclaimed by a General Assembly Resolution adopted in September 2001. In designating a focus for this year’s activities, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon launched a multiplatform campaign under the slogan WMD—We Must Disarm.
The following website includes further information about this global effort and provides opportunities to post your own events or to participate in the many planned activities: http://www.internationaldayofpeace.org/. Meditation Vigils and interfaith events are also being organized around the world, with a global 24-hour Vigil organized by Intuition in Service, using the Great Invocation or another world prayer every 15 minutes. Odyssey Networks, a not-for-profit working in collaboration with the United Nations, is mounting a multi-media campaign for the International Day of Peace. Among its many activities, it seeks to generate A Million Minutes for Peace in which everyone around the world is asked to take a minute of silence at Noon to pray for peace.
The following issue of the Diamond Light includes an article on "International Day of Peace Vigil" as well as an article on the causative relationship between right human relationships and peace.
As usual, you are invited to ponder the quote of the month, which is posted on the first of the month, along with its accompanying cosmic image. You are also invited to respond to this e-letter and/or share your thoughts and ideas about The Spiritual Work of the United Nations and the Liberation of Humanity within the Discussion Forum. (For your privacy, registration is required.)
We leave you with the following heart-felt and inspiring words of Katherine Tingley from "The Eternal Alliance" in the online book, The Gods Await:
When the conquest of self is made, the whole aspect of the universe changes. We move with divine affection close to the Mighty Mother and realize that all these years the silence and the stars in heaven have been pleading with us, and that for us the trees have put forth their leaves and all the flowers their blossoms, and that every bird that sang, sang for us, and that for our sake all beauty has been.
In loving planetary service,
If you would like to make a financial contribution to support this work, this will be gratefully received and appreciated.
