The Spiritual Work of the United Nations and the Liberation of Humanity
Universality and the Spiritual Work of the United Nations
When the world is convulsed and humanity heaves in turmoil, there remains only one path to salvation. How is it possible not to realize the highest, and the creative path of the ascent of the spirit! Just now when all the old ways are destroyed, when all the old energies are out-lived, when the planet itself shifts its crust, how is it possible not to adopt with one's entire spirit the new affirmations and the regenerating energies emanating from the might of the Chain of Hierarchy! Only thus can humanity be attracted to the higher energies. Following the foundations of the Cosmic Magnet, the highest manifestation will attract the spirit to the Highest. Thus, the highest law of Hierarchy creates through beneficence, affirming a better future.
Hierarchy, Agni Yoga Society, par. 396, New York, NY
We can save lives. We can uphold the principles on which this house is built. We can demonstrate that sovereignty and responsibility are mutually reinforcing principles. And we can assert the moral authority of this institution.
As the fourth kingdom in nature, humanity is an integral part of a greater Life encompassing planetary, solar and cosmic energies. Passing as we are into the Age of Aquarius, an understanding of this universal context is slowly dawning on the consciousness of increasing numbers of a humanity that is awakening to its spiritual heart beat and therefore to its spiritual responsibility.
The Ageless Wisdom refers to the eternal pulsation of a universal heart beat which irradiates our planet with energies that are as electro-magnetic waves emanating from the "Cosmic Magnet," creating that ever-present stream of Love Divine, which permeates all planes and states of planetary consciousness.
According to the Agni Yoga wisdom, this Cosmic Magnet is a "fiery admonition directing toward the General Good." It calls attention to the path of ascent, the path of higher consciousness, which can lead a struggling and suffering humanity into the realms of harmony, light and joy.
However, as Robert Browning affirms in his poem, "Old Pictures in Florence," humanity comes to the Good only after much suffering:
"When a soul has seen
The Hierarchy of Light and Love and Power does not impose or coerce and thus, humanity must intentionally and purposefully choose this path of ascent. For it is only by exercising its prerogative of free will and choice that humanity becomes self-aware and eventually learns self-mastery.
At the United Nations, this exercise in free will is often difficult to witness, causing much aggravation and despair to those who identify with humanity's suffering and are impatient with the UN's inability for more effective action.
For example, because of its inability to respond to mass atrocities such as those that occurred in Cambodia, Rwanda and Srebrenica, in 2005 the biggest-ever gathering of world leaders, meeting within the General Assembly, accepted the principle that they have a general "responsibility to protect" human beings from genocide, ethnic cleansing, war crimes and crimes against humanity.
The means by which to transform this concept, now known as R2P, into practice was recently debated within the General Assembly and it seems that although there is agreement on the core idea of protection, the Member States could not reach any consensus on how to move the principle of R2P from theory into operation, much less make it a part of international law.
An impassioned statement in support of R2P was put forth by Gareth Evans, a former Australian foreign minister and President Emeritus, International Crisis Group and Co-Chair, International Commission on Intervention and State Sovereignty:
"And let us recognize, above all when we have these debates, that the crucial concern should not be national interest, or ideology, but our common humanity—our obligation simply as human beings not to stand by watching our fellow human beings suffering unbearable, unutterable horrors. That's what the responsibility to protect is all about, that's why it is so important that it be effectively implemented in practice, and that's why this General Assembly debate must be about building on the consensus we have already, remarkably, achieved in 2005, looking not backwards, but forwards."
For an understanding of the parameters of the debate, the reader is referred to the recently posted statements of the Interactive Thematic Dialogue of the United Nations General Assembly on the Responsibility to Protect, which ended on July 28th.
As will be obvious from reading the statements, the Spiritual Workers of the planet have much work to accomplish.
This month we will be aided in that work by the available energies emanating from the sign of Leo, Sirius—that greater "star of sensitivity," which, in its turn, governs Leo—and all of the other attending solar and cosmic energies, which will provide humanity with the opportunity to eradicate all that hinders in their ability to fully respond to these beneficent energies.
As the Ageless Wisdom indicates, there are two elements in nature, which are connected in the public consciousness with the thought of purification—one is water and the other is fire. Leo is a fire sign. And, "upon the wheel reversed, fire takes the place of water and burns away all dross." Purification of the entire nature is thus gradually achieved until eventually, the individual is re-oriented towards universality and true self-awareness.
Seeking to give support to this purifying process, we once again call on you, our spiritual co-workers to participate in the monthly meditation meeting held within the United Nations to hearken to the call of the Cosmic Magnet.
For those of you who can travel to the United Nations Meditation Room, open to the public, we invite you to join us on Wednesday, August 5th to contribute to the worldwide effort undertaken by many at this time of the month. Using the meditation outline, "The Spiritual Work of the United Nations and the Liberation of Humanity," we will there meet for silent meditation from Noon until 12:30 p.m. Discussion will follow outside the Meditation Room from 12:30 — 1:15 p.m.
For those who live outside of the New York City area, or cannot join us in person, we ask you to join us subjectively. A copy of the meditation outline has been translated into several languages and is available upon request. You are invited to use this meditation, not only at the time of these public meetings, but also once weekly, every Friday.
Reminding us of our relationship to the greater cosmic whole, you are also invited to ponder the quote of the month along with its corresponding cosmic image. We also invite you to share your thoughts and ideas about "The Spiritual Work of the United Nations and the Liberation of Humanity" within the Discussion Forum. If you cannot join us in person this month, please plan to join us for one of the five remaining meditation meetings of the 2009-year, which are listed here.
For those who have requested the DVD of the June Seminar on Reconciliation and the Healing of Nations; the Voices of "We the Peoples…," these will be available by mid-August. Thank you for your patience.
We leave you with the following passage taken from the paper on "Meditation at the Time of the Solar Festivals," posted on-line in English, Portuguese and Spanish:
Each month at this time we have an opportunity to pause and turn our consciousness within, away from our personal concerns and activities and towards the meeting of human need. This is a collective worldwide group effort in which we are involved. We know that when two or more are gathered together with spiritual intent, the release of energy is exponentially greater than if we were to work alone. Energy follows thought. Ideas are attractive, magnetic centers of force, making an impact upon human consciousness when they carry enough potency…. Working together in thought and meditation at this time provides an opportunity to affect a positive change on our planet.
In loving service,
If you would like to make a financial contribution to support this work, this will be gratefully received and appreciated.
