The Spiritual Work of the United Nations and the Liberation of Humanity

The United Nations Striving to Build a Lighted Planetary House

July 2009

In studying the history of the human mind one is impressed again and again by the fact that the growth of the mind is the widening of the range of consciousness, and that each step forward has been a most painful and laborious achievement.

Carl Gustav Jung (1875-1961) in Memories, Dreams, Reflections

Events such as the financial crisis and climate change are not quirks of the marketplace, or quirks of nature. They are not inevitable events in the up-and-down cycle of human history.
Instead, they are markers of massive failure in the international systems that govern the way nations and their populations interact. They are markers of failure at a time of unprecedented interdependence among societies, capital markets, economies, and trade.

Dear Friends,

Although the Light on the planet daily grows as do the spiritual workers of the world who daily increase in numbers and strength, the fate of humanity yet hangs in the balance and so the questions must be asked: Which aspect of humanity will finally triumph and achieve dominance—spirit or matter, soul or personality, the way of progressive spiritual values and principles that uphold and honor the recognition of the one interdependent humanity or the way of ignorance, greed and selfishness?

The headlines from recent UN News reports clearly delineate the challenges: UN Urges Protection for Over 1 Billion Children Caught in Conflict; Some 42 Million People Uprooted Worldwide in 2008—UN Report; More than 1 Billion Go Hungry, the World Food Program Says; Urging World to Disarm, Ban Kicks Off Countdown to UN Day.

In the meditation outline, "The Spiritual Work of the United Nations and the Liberation of Humanity" there is an opportunity to reflect on the relationship between the work of the United Nations and the spiritual welfare of the planet and the rhetorical question is contemplated: "How can the work of the United Nations help create those planetary conditions that will allow humanity to fulfill its spiritual destiny?"

The founding Charter of the United Nations stipulates that

"We the peoples of the United Nations, Determined

  • to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, which twice in our lifetime has brought untold sorrow to mankind, and
  • to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person, in the equal rights of men and women and of nations large and small, and
  • to establish conditions under which justice and respect for the obligations arising from treaties and other sources of international law can be maintained, and
  • to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom,

and for these ends

  • to practice tolerance and live together in peace with one another as good neighbours, and
  • to unite our strength to maintain international peace and security, and
  • to ensure, by the acceptance of principles and the institution of methods, that armed force shall not be used, save in the common interest, and
  • to employ international machinery for the promotion of the economic and social advancement of all peoples,

have resolved to combine our efforts to accomplish these aims."

If these goals and objectives were to be realized, certainly the daily lives of the 6.7 billion people living on the planet would be transformed and planet Earth would be a much more hospitable planet for all the lives contained therein.

However, the push and pull of the forces in conflict on this planet and reflected within the United Nations have thus far not allowed for the realization of these evolutionary spiritual goals.

In his opening address at the recent UN Conference on the World Financial and Economic Crisis and Its Impact on Development, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called attention to the conflicting forces that have been clearly delineated in the current financial crisis:

"Surely, if the world can mobilize more than $18 trillion to keep the financial sector afloat, it can find more than $18 billion to keep commitments to Africa."

The 2009 Yearbook of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute is also instructive as it clearly reveals humanity's value choices. Therein, it is reported that in spite of the continuing world financial crisis, last year's global military spending reached a record of $1.46 trillion. The report points to the infectious paranoia that is inherent in growing military expenditures: "As one country increases its arms budget it sets off insecurity and spending increases among its neighbors."

Accounting for 60% of global military spending are the five permanent members of the UN Security Council with the United States accounting for 41.5% of expenditures, China for 5.8%, France for 4.5%, the UK for 4.5% and Russia for 4.0%.

Under this month's astrological energies emanating from the sign of Cancer, the conflicting forces seeking dominance in the planetary life are described to be those forces that either lead to imprisonment in form or those that lead to the successful development and eventual use of the form aspect to express the spiritual life; those forces that either insist on self-preservation at all cost or those forces that lead to divine understanding and expression.

As it is explained in the ageless wisdom, "Love as relationship to divinity and wisdom as relationship to form lie behind the soul's intent. In space and time, for long aeons, form controls and hides the soul." And, it is in Cancer that the perfect instrument of service can be forged wherein the soul is revealed and the spiritual worker can render service to the masses instead of being immersed and lost in the mass. (Esoteric Astrology, pp. 341-342)

It is in Cancer that the available energies produce those difficult conditions and situations, which will lead to the needed struggle; under the influence of these energies, humanity experiences the symbolic imprisonment and the pains and penalties of wrong orientation or it can begin its journey of salvage and redemption.

The ultimate objective of the Cancer experience and the purpose for which incarnation has been taken is articulated clearly within the esoteric keynote of this sign: "I build a lighted house and therein dwell."

Thus we ask, will the United Nations be allowed to build a lighted house for humanity or will the resisting forces continue to perpetuate the suffering and travail of the imprisoning darkness?

Seeking to give support to those energies that can build a lighted house, we heed the call of the Raja and Agni Yoga wisdom that enjoins the regular and rhythmic sending of good thoughts into space, and once again we call on you, our spiritual co-workers to participate in the monthly meditation meeting held within the United Nations to support and strengthen the spiritual work of the United Nations.

For those of you who can travel to the United Nations Meditation Room, open to the public, we invite you to join us on Tuesday, July 7th to contribute to the worldwide effort undertaken by many at this time of the month. Using the meditation outline, "The Spiritual Work of the United Nations and the Liberation of Humanity," we will there meet for silent meditation from Noon until 12:30 p.m. Discussion will follow outside the Meditation Room from 12:30 — 1:15 p.m.

For those who live outside of the New York City area, or cannot join us in person, we ask you to join us subjectively. A copy of the meditation outline has been translated into several languages and is available upon request. You are invited to use this meditation, not only at the time of these public meetings, but also once weekly, every Friday.

Reminding us of our relationship to the greater cosmic whole, you are also invited to 1) ponder the quote of the month along with its corresponding cosmic image, 2) share your thoughts and ideas about "The Spiritual Work of the United Nations and the Liberation of Humanity" within the Discussion Forum and 3) note the remaining meditation meeting dates for the 2009-year.

This month we are also pleased to offer the new issue of the Diamond Light Newsletter and the available transcripts of last month's seminar, Reconciliation and the Healing of Nations; the Voices of "We the Peoples…"

Thanks to the generosity and goodwill of Costavideo who has volunteered time and expertise, DVDs of the Seminar will be made available at the cost of materials and postage in the amount of $15.00. Please let us know if you would like us to reserve one or more copies for you.

Contributions to offset the cost of the above Seminar and for the furtherance of this work will be welcome and joyously received. Click here if you would like to send a tax-deductible contribution via postal mail or if you would like to make an on-line tax-deductible credit card contribution.

We leave you with the following encouraging thought from par. 300 of the Agni Yoga book, Heart:

When mankind shall agree to send forth good thought simultaneously, then the infected atmosphere of the lower spheres will at once clear. Hence, it is necessary to take care, even a few times daily, to send out thought not about oneself, but about the world.

In loving service,
