The Spiritual Work of the United Nations and the Liberation of Humanity

The United Nations: Striving to Liberate the Soul of Humanity

January 2008

When mankind shall agree to send forth good thought simultaneously, then the infected atmosphere of the lower spheres will at once clear. Hence, it is necessary to take care, even a few times daily, to send out thought not about oneself, but about the world. Thus the thinking will accustom itself to disinterested strivings. As the Savior of mankind thinks only of the entire world, so in emulation of Him we can apply our thoughts for the manifestation of creative energy. It is not necessary to look upon the transmission of thought as a supernatural act. Let it provide nurture for the spirit, just as does fuel for the bonfire during the night. Thus, also, it is necessary simply to follow the highest example. The heart will be like a trusty chronometer when it calls to thought about all....Let good befall the world!

Heart, par. 300, Agni Yoga Society, New York

We therefore move into a new year with renewed commitment to our ultimate mission—building a stronger United Nations—for a better world.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon

Dear Friends,

Initiating the work of the new year, at a town hall meeting held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, in which colleagues from around the world participated via video-link, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon offered the following words of inspiration to his colleagues in the UN community:

"The world recognizes the indispensable nature of the United Nations. Let us take heart from the fact that multilateralism is alive and well and in greater demand than ever—that people look to us for global solutions to global problems."

While acknowledging the daunting challenges which face the United Nations and the world, Mr. Ban asked his colleagues to remember that the world has great expectations of the United Nations.

Indeed, the challenges of the New Year are numerous. Already, 2008 has witnessed growing conflict in Kenya and Sri Lanka. There is the need to address the tragic assassination of Benazir Bhutto and the deteriorating situation in Pakistan, the on-going and deep rooted turmoil and violence in Iraq and Afghanistan, the difficult and seemingly entrenched problems in Darfur and the Middle East, the urgency of global climate change, and the striving to achieve the designated Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) at this mid-way point to the target date of 2015, which this year will focus "on the poorest of the poor—the bottom billion," culminating in a high-level meeting of Heads of State in September.

Additionally, because this year is the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was adopted on December 10th, 1948, member states will be asked to redouble their efforts to achieve the goals set forth in this Declaration, so that what has been called the "conscience of the world" can become a living reality.

These and many other challenges facing the world community will be brought into the halls and meeting rooms of this world body, with the expectation that under this planetary cycle of conferences, the goals and objectives of the United Nations for improved progress in greater freedom will prevail.

Mindful of the fact that the United Nations is a reflection of the consciousness of the whole of humanity, we realize, as we have often stated within this letter, that the Forces of Light and Love flow through the halls and meeting rooms of the United Nations—as do the forces which would impede the Common Good. Obstructing the work and spiritual intentions of the United Nations, which would serve the Common Good and the welfare of all, are what the esoteric wisdom refers to as "the forces of selfishness and separativeness."

The untold number of people of goodwill and of spiritual intention who daily strive to bring about right human relations for all on the planet are opposed and thwarted by those who selfishly seek the advancement of their own immediate ends. Their main, if not sole agenda, within the global environment is what will benefit them individually or what is in the interest of their particular group or nation. They seek the attainment of their narrow ends, no matter at what cost to the rest of the world.

The unhappy state of the world as we see it today is the result of centuries in which these forces of selfishness and cruelty have dominated the world stage.

Herein lies the opportunity for all the men and women of goodwill and of spiritual intention who are now reading this message.

The esoteric keynote of the sign of Aquarius—the energies with which we will be working this month—is "Water of Life Am I Poured Forth for Thirsty Men."

Under the influence of the sign of Aquarius and its accompanying energies we have the opportunity to awaken to universal love and recognize the bond which holds all together subjectively and in truth, able eventually to bring about the desired changes which will produce those new conditions which will help the soul of humanity to express itself more freely. These energies provide support for all who are inspired to serve the Common Good and the welfare of the whole of humanity.

Under the influence of Aquarian energies, the individual "awakens to the beauty of the group life, group interest and his individual responsibility towards the group and begins to live his life and to spend himself in the service of humanity." (Esoteric Astrology, p. 145)

At this time in humanity's evolutionary journey, humanity as a whole has the opportunity to embrace the path of discipleship, thus, humanity, "the world disciple," is presented with difficult situations and crises, which will require free choice and discriminative, pioneering, wise response and correct decision, in response to these crises. We stand at the gateway of a new and transformed world. Whether we will enter and cooperate with the Forces of Light and Love depends on the decision and commitment that each person makes within the silence of his/her heart and mind.

Practicing the Science of Meditation and working within the cycle of the Solar Festivals, we will have the opportunity once again this month to meet as a group to cooperatively work with those Forces of Light and Love and to "send good thoughts simultaneously." In group formation, we will use the meditation outline, "The Spiritual Work of the United Nations and the Liberation of Humanity." Please note that for this month only, we will meet in the large Meditation Hall of the New York Theosophical Society, next to the Quest Book Store at 240 East 53rd Street on Monday, January 21st. The guided meditation will begin promptly at Noon ending at 12:30; discussion will follow until 1:15 p.m.

For next month's meeting, we will return to the usual venue of the UN Meditation Room. Feel free to request a paper schedule of all forthcoming meeting dates for 2008. These are also on-line at the following address:

For those of you who cannot join us in person, we count on your meditative thoughtforms to help further humanity's liberation and progress into the new age of Light and Love. Will you join in using the meditation outline "The Spiritual Work of the United Nations and the Liberation of Humanity" both this Monday, January 21st and weekly, every Friday? If you would like a copy of the meditation outline in English, Portuguese, Polish, Russian or Spanish, please inquire. Also, please let us know if you would like to receive this letter in either Spanish or in the English-language plain-text version.

As always, your responses to this letter, the work of the United Nations as well as your contemplative thoughts on your work with the UN meditation outline are welcome. You may share these responses by posting them in the UN Discussion Forum or by using the e-mail address, also listed under the greeting, at the end of this message.
