Love, Forgiveness and Reconciliation:
Key to the Spiritual Work of the United Nations

December 2007

May forgiveness on the part of all men be the keynote at this time.

Citing the necessity of reconciliation processes for the establishment of peace in societies affected by conflicts, the General Assembly has proclaimed 2009 as the International Year of Reconciliation.

United Nations Reference Paper No. 46

Dear Friends,

Addressing this year's General Assembly, the Italian President, Romano Prodi, emphasized the fact that humankind is capable of "making progress not only in science but also in the field of ethics." And so it is.

At the United Nations, the attempts to bring an end to the cycles of entrenched violence and suffering are ceaseless. Calling on humanity's better nature and seeking to create a more ethical global society is the perpetual effort that defines this organization.

One such effort is the adoption of the General Assembly resolution on the International Year of Reconciliation 2009. The United Nations' records indicate that the proclamation for the Year is a vehicle for creating a fraternal human society—one based on values such as truth and justice. The proclamation is also seen as a vehicle for restoring the unity of mankind now separated by ethnic, religious and other kinds of conflicts. It seeks to eliminate the culture of war and instead provide a new paradigm for a changed global ethic—one in which reconciliation embeds into culture the high ideals that make humanity and the common good the cornerstone of all global development. (GA/10536)

Reconciliation has become increasingly recognized as a necessary component of effective conflict resolution. Beginning with South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission of 1995, over 20 such commissions have been created in other countries since then. A search for the concept within the United Nations website yields 22,900 entries.

The esoteric heartbeat of the process of reconciliation is the act of forgiveness, defined within the Ageless Wisdom as simply, "to give for." Contrary to popular usage, to forgive is not a synonym for pardon. Rather, forgiveness is to sacrifice for the sake of others and for the good of the whole.

Within the Annals of this Ageless Wisdom, manifestation itself is recognized as the Great Forgiveness because "the stupendous Lives—outside manifested existence—entered into manifestation in order to give Themselves for the lesser lives and forms of existence in order that these lesser lives might be enabled to proceed onward towards a goal which is known to Deity alone, and thus eventually reach high places of spiritual expression." (The Externalisation of the Hierarchy, pp. 165-166)

We say that "God is Love" and love in this solar system signifies giving and sacrifice.

Forgiveness is also based on the recognition of the universality of human error in the past. All groups, nations and individuals have made mistakes. We are or have all been guilty of lack of love and tolerance.

Calling in the need to forget the past so that humanity can free itself from the ancient hatreds, while relinquishing the memory of the old mistakes in policy, judgment and method, the work of forgiveness is of great moment, as it will allow humanity eventually to produce the civilization of light and love, which will characterize the Aquarian Age:

"Hierarchy, responsibility, group interplay, and forgiveness or sacrifice—these are the four categories of recognition which will enable each person to do his part and take his share in bridging between person and person, between group and group, and between nation and nation, thus establishing…the civilisation of light and love which will be characteristic of the Aquarian Age." (Education in the New Age, p. 130.)

It is fitting to consider the need to forgive at this time when planet Earth is being flooded with the energies from the sign of Capricorn. Capricorn guards the secret of the Soul itself—the "secret of the hidden glory" at the heart of all life. In Capricorn the spiritual seeker learns the meaning of the growing light, which greets his/her progress as s/he climbs upward to the mountaintop. The flashes of intuition change into the blazing and constant light of the soul, irradiating the mind and providing that point of fusion which must ever be the "fusion of the two lights, the greater and the lesser light"—the light of the personality and the light of the Soul. (Esoteric Astrology, p. 181)

Practicing the Science of Meditation and working within the cycle of the Solar Festivals, we will have the opportunity once again this month to meet in the United Nations Meditation Room on Friday, 21 December from Noon - 12:30 p.m. and for discussion outside the Meditation Room from 12:30 - 1:15 p.m.

For those of you who cannot join us in person, we count on your meditative thoughtforms to help humanity recognize, understand and participate in the needed planetary redemption and salvation. Will you join in using the meditation outline "The Spiritual Work of the United Nations and the Liberation of Humanity," both this Friday, December 21st and weekly, every Friday? If you would like a copy of the meditation outline in English, Portuguese, Polish, Russian or Spanish, please inquire. Also, please let us know if you would like to receive future issues of this letter in Spanish or in the English-language plain-text edition.

As always, your responses to this letter, the work of the United Nations as well as your contemplative thoughts on your work with the UN meditation outline are welcome. You may share these responses by posting them in the UN Discussion Forum or by using the UN@aquaac.org e-mail address, also listed under the greeting, at the end of this message.

We want to take this opportunity to let you know that the new Diamond Light newsletter will soon be reaching those who have requested it via postal mail and it is now available on-line: http://www.aquaac.org/dl/currenttop.html

We also want to bring your attention to the "Forgiveness Week" initiative sponsored by the Gajalomawa Foundation in Australia, which will take place from 20-26 January 2008. Information about this week, available in several languages, is available from gajalomawa@bigpond.com

As usual, the "Quote of the Month" and its accompanying cosmic image, which change on the first of every month, are available at the following website address: http://www.aquaac.org/qotm/qotm.html.
