The Spiritual Work of the United Nations and the Liberation of Humanity

Building a Planetary Lighted House

June 2007

"Those who are demanding to be saved have cried aloud. Their voices penetrate into the formless world and there evoke response.
"Those who in distant aeons have pledged themselves to save and serve respond. Their cry too rings forth and, ringing, penetrates into the dark and distant places within the worlds of form.
"And thus a vortex is established and kept alive by that constant dual sound. …Slowly the vision of the Saving One becomes a light which guides the Crying Ones into the place of light."

The Old Commentary in Esoteric Astrology by Alice A. Bailey

Dear Friends,

In his farewell address to the General Assembly of the United Nations, Secretary-General Kofi Annan pointed to the three great challenges facing our world community—the same challenges for which he sought solution throughout his ten-year tenure as Secretary-General: an unjust world economy, world disorder, and widespread contempt for human rights and the rule of law. As a result of these challenges, he said, "we face a world whose divisions threaten the very notion of an international community, upon which this institution [the United Nations] stands."

Further elaborating his point, Secretary-General Kofi Annan stated that just as it was clear to him in 1997 when he first took office, so it was even clearer in 2006, as he was leaving "that the only answer to this divided world must be a truly United Nations…. What matters," he said, "is that the strong, as well as the weak, agree to be bound by the same rules, to treat each other with the same respect…. What matters is that all peoples accept the need to listen…that they come together, not at cross purposes, but with a common purpose: a common purpose—to shape their common destiny."

"Each of us," he continued, "must share the pain of all who suffer, and the joy of all who hope, wherever in the world they may live…. That is what the founders of this Organization believed in. It is what I believe in. It is what the vast majority of people in this world want to believe in."

More than a half-century earlier, in his Nobel Peace address, Mr. Ralph Bunche, another honorable and dedicated UN official addressed the same hope and need for the United Nations to heal the divisions threatening the unity of the international community, thus establishing a peaceful new way of life:

"Peace, to have meaning for many who have known only suffering in both peace and war, must be translated into bread or rice, shelter, health and education, as well as freedom and human dignity—a steadily better life. If peace is to be secure, long-suffering and long-starved forgotten peoples of the world, the underprivileged and the undernourished, must begin to realize without delay the promise of a new day and a new life."

Neither Secretary-General Kofi Annan, nor Mr. Ralph Bunche were hesitant to admit to both the great weaknesses and the great strengths of the United Nations—both reflecting clearly the consciousness of the world community, ranging from the heights of vision, commitment and altruism to the baseness, cruelty and depravity that yet continue to stalk our planet.

In his Nobel Peace address Mr. Bunche referred to this dual consciousness evident within the United Nations, which at that time was made up of 60 Member States:

"The United Nations itself is but a cross section of the world's peoples. It reflects, therefore, the typical fears, suspicions and prejudices, which bedevil human relations throughout the world. In the delegations from the sixty Member States and in the international Secretariat in which most of them are represented may be found individual qualities of goodness and badness, honesty and subterfuge, courage and timorousness, internationalism and chauvinism. It could not be otherwise. Still, the activities of all are within the framework of a great international organization dedicated to the imperative causes of peace, freedom and justice in the world."

In his great wisdom, Mr. Bunche recognized that the United Nations belongs to all the people and thus, it "must always be on the people's side." Yet, he realized that, although the United Nations could bring about world peace and a better way of life for all people, this could only happen if it were given adequate authority and support. He referred to what we more clearly realize today—that such a "decision [to give adequate authority and support to the United Nations] really rests with the peoples of the world."

And it is at this juncture—as we consider how to inspire the peoples of the world in order to grow a lighted consciousness—so as to bring greater justice and unity into our world that we turn to the astrological energies with which humanity can cooperate this month.

However, first it might be helpful to recollect that from an esoteric point of view, the whole thrust of astrology is the unfoldment of consciousness; it is the story of a magnetic interplay among existing forces and energies, leading eventually to the externalization of the inner reality, the Soul. Esoteric astrology is concerned with the response of form—vast as in a solar system, or microcosmic as in a human being—to the urge or pull of foci of energy and of streams of forces. (Esoteric Astrology by Alice Bailey, p. 336)

The intention of these planetary, systemic and cosmic energies that monthly flood our planetary sphere is to further the evolutionary Plan of Light, Love and Power. Thus, by working with the sign of Cancer and its attendant energies this month, humanity has an opportunity to "build a lighted house and therein dwell." Cancer influences the Light within the form. It is the light awaiting the stimulation coming from the Soul.

Seeking to align with these beneficent energies in order to bring them into the work of the United Nations for the benefit of the whole planet, you are invited to join the group meditation in the United Nations Meditation Room from Noon until 12:30 and then for discussion from 12:30 until 1:00 p.m. on Friday, June 29th. The schedule of monthly meetings for the rest of the year can be found at the following address:

For those of you who cannot travel to New York City to be with us in person, we also ask you to join in using the meditation outline, "The Spiritual Work of the United Nations and the Liberation of Humanity" which is available for those who need it—in Spanish, Portuguese, Polish and in Russian.

As usual, the new quote of the month and the accompanying cosmic image will be available on the first of the month.

May we each apply ourselves as best we can in order to bring our quota of Light, Love and the Will-to-Good to the task of building a Planetary Lighted home!
