The Spiritual Work of the United Nations and the Liberation of Humanity
Universal Law and the Spiritual Work of the United Nations
Free will remains the distinctive quality of man. It is to be regretted if this marvelous energy propels madmen into an abyss. One can take warning measures, but it is inadmissible to break the law of free will. In the course of the fate of Atlantis one may see that plentiful forewarnings were issued, but the madmen did not listen.

In short, the events of the last 10 years have not resolved, but sharpened the three great challenges…an unjust world economy, world disorder, and widespread contempt for human rights and the rule of law. As a result, we face a world whose divisions threaten the very notion of an international community, upon which this institution stands.
Secretary-General Kofi Annan, Address to the General Assembly, 19 September 2006
According to rule 62 of the Rules of Procedure, the new General Assembly President opened the 61st United Nations' General Assembly by asking all member States to "stand for one moment of silence, prayer or meditation."
Thus, began the two-week "General Debate" wherein all heads of the 192 Member States, or their representatives, had the remarkable opportunity—unique to this generation—to address themselves to the global plight of humanity and life on this planet, and to put forth suggestions for solution.
From their various perspectives and according to their perceptions, these Heads of State, 74 in all, and their representatives, called on the UN to become more powerful, more just and more effective.
Their statements reflect the cry of humanity. Along with the debates and discussion of the NGO Conference preceding the General Assembly debate, we have a composite picture of the untold suffering and trauma in our world and the diverse and often conflicting prescriptions for solution.
From ending genocide in Darfur, to bringing peace to warring peoples and states, to respecting human rights and the rule of law, to protecting innocent civilians and children, to meeting the basic needs of the world's impoverished and oppressed, and more, the world's governments are turning for solution, far too often as a last recourse, to the United Nations. This state of affairs recently prompted one reporter in the Christian Science Monitor to write, "the world has come to look at the UN as the global 911."
Although the United Nations' mandate is put forth in its Charter and in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, it was especially clear this year that the UN is a mechanism for "we the peoples" of the world. The way it functions in the world—many would refer to its dysfunction—reflects the will of its Member States, who in turn, reflect world public opinion.
The full potential of this "hope for humanity"—held in trust by the true visionaries and spiritual workers of the past and the present, and those spiritual Beings who watch over the affairs of our planet, cannot be actualized without the willing cooperation of the people and governments of the world.
Thus, the UN is a gauge or a measure by which we can assess general planetary consciousness. Is this consciousness focused within the lower strata of selfishness, greed and imperious power or is it focused towards the summit of the Common Good, abiding by Universal and Cosmic Law?
As we search for an answer to this question, we can find reasons for optimism; however, there is also cause for grave and dire concern.
It is with this compelling concern and the need for enlightened choice that we therefore refer to the cosmic energies currently flooding our world and permeating all planes and states of planetary consciousness.
Libra, the Ageless Wisdom tells us, "governs and controls ... the path of choices, of deliberately applied purificatory measures and the turning point." (Esoteric Astrology, p. 249)
Being a part of the four-armed Cardinal Cross, Libra and all its attending energies can help humanity relate spirit and matter, bringing these into a definite relationship, inspiring humanity to participate in the divine plan and thus fulfill divine purpose.
In this sign, the first aspect of will or power expresses itself as Law, legislation, legality and justice. Therefore, by mindfully responding to the cosmic energies of this sign of "intuitive perception," humanity has the opportunity to carefully and judiciously use the balancing, analytical faculty of the mind to weigh the current global situation against Cosmic Law and tilt the balance of global consciousness towards the path of spiritual aspiration and the summit of the Common Good.
For those who can travel to the United Nations, we will seek to tilt those scales by meeting for meditation in the UN Meditation Room at 46th Street and 1st Avenue at Noon on Friday, October 6th.
We look forward to the participation of those of you who live in the area and we invite others of you who cannot travel to New York City to join us in using the meditation outline, "The Spiritual Work of the United Nations and the Liberation of Humanity." For those who may need it, the meditation outline is available in different languages and as always, we encourage you to also use the meditation weekly, every Friday.
Related to this sign of Libra, you are invited to reflect on this month's chosen quote and the accompanying cosmic image, which presents the rings of Uranus, first discovered from ground-based observations as recently as 1977.

We leave you with the following quote, from the address given by H.E. Mr. Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, President of the Federative Republic of Brazil, referencing the imperative need for each of us to take responsibility for tipping the scales of choice towards the Common Good:
"This generation has a unique opportunity to show the world that selfish interests will not prevail over the common good. History will not absolve us of our omission."
