We will have time to reach the Millennium Development Goals – worldwide and in most,
Secretary-General Kofi Annan
It is that time of year again when we turn our focus to what is this year, the 59th Annual United Nations Department of Public Information NGO Conference, which will take place at United Nations Headquarters from Wednesday, 6 September until Friday, 8 September.
In full awareness of the approaching target date of 2015 by which time the eight Millennium Development Goals must be met, this year’s Conference will focus on the theme of “Unfinished Business: Effective Partnerships for Human Security and Sustainable Development.”
Preceding the opening of the UN General Assembly, which will take place on Tuesday, 12 September, the NGO Conference will welcome over 2500 representatives of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and other civil society activists from more than 90 countries.
Focusing on accountability, transparency and ecological sustainability, while also considering the role of the media and communications technology, this year’s Conference is taking a very sober “let’s roll-up our shirt sleeves and put our collective noses to the grindstone” attitude as it will consider how the world-wide community can dramatically accelerate and scale up action to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.
Beginning his ten-year term as UN Secretary-General on 1 January 1997, this is the last year that Mr. Kofi Annan, the seventh Secretary-General, will address the NGO Conference. A live web cast can be accessed by anyone from anywhere in the world from the following web address: http://www.unngodpiconference.org/, which also includes further information about the Conference.
This month we also want to call your attention to the International Day of Peace. In 2001 the UN General Assembly unanimously adopted the resolution designating September 21st of each year as the International Day of Peace. The intention of the resolution is to have the entire world observe at least one day as a global ceasefire and a day of peace and nonviolence.
At present 1600 organizations in 179 countries have committed to some form of action and signed up at the following web site to participate: http://www.internationaldayofpeace.org/
Both the NGO Conference and the International Day of Peace fittingly are taking place under the influence of the Virgo Solar Festival, the peak of which occurs this month on Thursday, 7 September.
The Ageless Wisdom tells us that the sign of Virgo is one of the most significant in the zodiac for its symbolism concerns the whole goal of the evolutionary process, which is to shield, nurture and finally reveal the hidden spiritual reality—the Soul.
The light of wisdom of which Virgo is the guardian manifests upon “the radiant surface of the earth;” however, before this can occur, much persistence, endurance and continuity of effort are required. This “endurance aspect of the will-to-be” is assisted by the energies available on our planet at this time of the year.
The influence of Virgo helps us to recognize our identity with both divine aspects—matter and Spirit, as reflected within the ancient and esoteric keynote of this sign, “I am the Mother and the Child. I, God, I matter am.”
Because the 2nd day of the NGO Conference falls on the exact day of the Virgo Solar Festival, we invite those of you who are in the New York City area to support the Conference by joining with us in the UN Meditation Room of Quiet in the morning of the following two days:
Thursday, September 7th from 9:00–9:30 a.m.—the day of the Virgo Solar Festival; and,
Wednesday, September 6th from 9:00–9:30 a.m.
For those of you who are outside of the geographic area, please join us by using the meditation outline, “The Spiritual Work of the United Nations and the Liberation of Humanity,” on all three days of the Conference, if possible. The meditation is available upon request.
Many of you reading this message are participating in the “Group Sharing” service activity within the UN Discussion Forum. If you do not yet have a username and password to access the Forum site, but are interested in participating in this form of service, please inquire via the e-mail address at the end of this letter.
We leave you with a quotation from Esoteric Astrology, further revealing the nature of the Virgo energies: “Virgo stands for the ‘womb of time’ wherein God’s plan (the mystery and the secret of the ages) is slowly matured and—with pain and discomfort and through struggle and conflict—brought into manifestation at the end of the appointed time.”
We close with the Sanskrit greeting that honors and activates the Soul, the divine consciousness within each of you: “Namaste”,
