The Spiritual Work of the United Nations and the Liberation of Humanity

The Forces of Enlightenment and the Work of the United Nations

May 2006

Now, as the Shamballa force is beginning to pour into the world, man is seeking another interpretation of God's will which …will produce an understanding cooperation with the divine Plan and an enlightened fusion of the individual will with the great, divine will and this for the greater good of the whole. For this desirable attitude there is worldwide preparation going forward in a simple and unobtrusive manner through the gradual fomentation of the will-to-good everywhere and the demand, so universally voiced, that human conditions may be more truly enlightened, more acutely polarised for the benefit of the whole and more definitely subordinated to the innate divine urge for beauty, synthesis and the free expression of the hidden mystery which is to be found at the heart of all forms.

Let us resolve to work together towards the common good, and for the harmonious and peaceful coexistence of all the world’s people.

Dear Friends,

Much has been written about the dawning of the “Age of Aquarius” with its keynotes of understanding, cooperation, serving, sharing, and enlightened worldviews. In this age into which we are advancing, it is the subjective, spiritual nature that will supersede today’s focus on the objective, material form.

As the indwelling Soul—the inner spiritual essence—is recognized and actualized, so will humanity begin to build a world of truer values, leading to a new and better civilization—one that emphasizes the divine urge for beauty and synthesis, thus dissipating the now prevalent experiences of aggression, competition, oppression, cruelty, selfishness and greed.

With its focus on cosmic infinity, the Age of Aquarius is the age of the mind’s true liberation—the age when the idea of the Common Good inspires human activity and supersedes the present overwhelmingly self-oriented and binding emotional and material responses to life.

As we have often written in these monthly letters, the United Nations is “in seed” an Aquarian organization. In its founding objectives and goals, and in its recent formulation and striving to attain the Millennium Development Goals, the focus of this organization is on the Common Good—the realization of improved standards of living, in greater freedom for all.

A prime example of this enlightened Aquarian focus is the recently announced United Nations backed initiative that would abolish school fees, in many of the developing countries, while helping these countries develop education systems that are inclusive, equitable and sustainable. At a recent meeting in Nairobi, Kenya, education officials from Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, Ethiopia and Ghana shared their experiences in abolishing educational fees with colleagues from Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which have recently agreed to take that step. Haiti also participated, as did experts from development agencies, donors, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and academics. It was recognized that school fees consume nearly a quarter of a poor family’s income in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The UN’s synthetic focus on the will-to-benefit the whole is also well-reflected in a recently unveiled multimedia initiative designed to highlight the diversity and significance of the contributions that the United Nations has made since it was founded in 1945. This interactive online presentation, entitled "60 Ways the UN Makes a Difference", depicts the UN’s vast array of work that seeks to improve people’s lives around the world. Offered in Book Version, Text Version, and Flash Version, this creative educational tool highlights the fact that often, without attracting attention, the United Nations and its family of agencies has achieved a myriad of successes, from eradicating smallpox and ending apartheid to promoting the rights of persons with disabilities.

This emphasis on education and the building of an enlightened public opinion about the plight of humanity and the planet is very much in keeping with the cosmic energies entering our planet this month. Emanating from the sign of Taurus and the accompanying Forces of Enlightenment, which are a distinctive part of the Wesak Festival, these energies, coming from “far distant places” can awaken humanity to “the hidden mystery to be found at the heart of all forms.”

However, because of humanity’s dual nature, these powerful forces and energies can either inspire a measure of illumination, or, alternatively, they can produce in certain nations, groups and individuals a welling up of the self-will or the will-to-power, imprisoning the mind and leading to increased sectarianism, authoritarianism and oppression.

In the words of the Ageless Wisdom text, "Esoteric Astrology", the question therefore becomes, “Will this Taurian influence, increased as it is by the incoming Shamballa forces, produce the floodlight of illumination of which Taurus is the custodian, or will it simply foment desire, increase selfishness and bring humanity to the ‘fiery heights of self-interest’ instead of to the mountain of vision and initiation?” Which will succeed, the will of the Bull of desire or the will of the Bull of divine illumined expression?

You are invited to join us in meditation as we strive to align and identify with the incoming Forces of Enlightenment and the “floodlight of illumination” now pouring into our planet and most potently available on Saturday, May 13th, the actual day of the Wesak Festival. Let us create directed, enlightened thoughtforms as we seek to bring these energies into the work of the United Nations, thus ensuring the liberation of humanity. (A copy of the meditation formula, “The Spiritual Work of the United Nations and the Liberation of Humanity” is available in multiple languages upon request.)

You are also invited to reflect and ponder on this month’s chosen quote, accompanied by a striking picture of the “grand stellar nursery known as the Orion Nebula."

Thanks to some helpful feedback, the “group sharing” section of the UN Discussion Forum is now in its second "incarnation" and soon, you will receive information about how to access this section of the web site which—as per your suggestions—is now closed to the general public, but open and welcoming to those of you who receive these monthly letters and others of your co-workers whom you would like to invite into the discussion.
