The Compassionate Heart and the Work of the United Nations

March 2006

Hast thou attuned thy heart and mind to the great mind and heart of all mankind? For as the sacred River's roaring voice whereby all Nature-sounds are echoed back, so must the heart of him "who in the stream would enter," thrill in response to every sigh and thought of all that lives and breathes.

The Voice of the Silence, Helena Petrovna Blavatsky

How necessary it is to learn to feel one’s heart not as one’s own, but as the universal one.

Dear Friends,

Among the many projects for renewal and reform that were agreed upon by the 191* Member States at last year's United Nations 60th Anniversary Summit was a UN disaster relief fund that could quickly respond to natural and man-made disasters in order to save thousands of lives that would otherwise be lost to delay under the current system of disaster relief.

This landmark $500-million disaster relief fund, known as the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) was formally launched on 9 March 2006.

Speaking at the launch, Secretary-General Kofi Annan offered the following remarks: "We meet to launch a fund that is proactive rather than reactive. The CERF will provide a ready pool of resources that better empower the United Nations in funding immediate relief efforts in the aftermath of disasters." He went on, "of course, for the international community, the CERF is not simply a fund; it is a statement of principle. It is a statement that in a world of plenty, unnecessary and avoidable suffering is inexcusable; it is a statement that suffering anywhere is a threat to humanity everywhere."

Underscoring CERF's importance, Jan Eliasson, the current President of the 191-member* General Assembly, which approved the Fund in December, described the Fund as a "most important qualitative step forward." He added, "victims of humanitarian emergencies often desperately need our help within the first few days of the emergency...It simply was not good enough that—until now—they had to wait while...the UN system asked for donations."

The UN Emergency Relief Coordinator, Jan Egeland, further pointed out that in the past, too often, aid resembled a lottery in which a few win but most lose based on considerations other than need. CERF allows the UN relief system to move from lottery to predictability so that all those who suffer will receive aid.

Dependent entirely on voluntary contributions, thus far 36 donors have pledged $256 million. UN Member States and the general public will be able to keep track of how and where the money is being spent by means of a dedicated CERF website, which was just started on 9 March and which will be regularly updated: http://ochaonline2.un.org/Default.aspx?alias=ochaonline2.un.org/cerf

This initiative is reflective of the Compassionate Heart working within the midst of the United Nations. It is only the consecrated and awakened heart, full of love for all, vibrant with compassion and with understanding that can relieve suffering on our planet. Goodness, in its most profound expression lies in the sanctuary of the heart—the innermost depth of divine intuition.

The universal energies with which we work this month and which are most potently available this Tuesday, March 14th can awaken this compassion and goodness, if we but lift our hearts and minds to these sources of inspiration.

The esoteric keynote for the astrological sign of Pisces—the energies of which are now flooding our planet—is, “I leave the Father’s House and, turning back, I save.” This keynote indicates the possibility for humanity to engage in world service and world uplift.

Regarding world service, we want to take this opportunity to invite you to visit the newly formed Discussion Forum, especially created for those of you who are using the meditation outline, “The Spiritual Work of the United Nations and the Liberation of Humanity,” and open to anyone who would like to lend your heart and mind energies to supporting the spiritual work of the United Nations.

By using meditation as a planetary service, we are working at the evocation of a more compassionate heart and at the visualization and the projection of a more enlightened world civilization.

With the Discussion Forum we are seeking to create a virtual meeting place for your thoughts, insights and inspirations. You are welcome to communicate and share your spiritual hopes and actions for a strengthened United Nations. We hope that working together we will inspire each other to more fully engage the Compassionate Heart and the Spiritual Will so that together, we can provide more of what the world needs: more Light, Love, and Power, recognized as the unconquerable nature of Goodness.

You will be able to access this Forum by this coming Tuesday, March 14th via the Aquarian Age Community home page: http://www.aquaac.org/.

Because this is a new venture for us, we ask that you help us perfect its functionality; we will welcome your suggestions for improvements. We look forward to hearing from you via this Discussion Forum.

If you would like to join in using the meditation outline, "The Spiritual Work of the United Nations and the Liberation of Humanity," which is also available in Spanish, Portuguese and Polish, please let us know and we will send it upon request. Also, if you know of anyone who would be interested in receiving this letter in Spanish or Portuguese, we will gladly add new names to those lists.

Updating the biblical injunction to 'turn swords into ploughshares,' the United Nations mission in Liberia is training former combatants as blacksmiths as part of its reintegration and rehabilitation programme to help the West African country recover from almost 15 years of vicious civil war. The former fighters have been 'trained to fight a new war—the war on poverty." (http://www.un.org/apps/news/story.asp?NewsID=17602&Cr=Liberia&Cr1=&Kw1=Liberia&Kw2=&Kw3=)
