The Spiritual Work of the United Nations and the Liberation of Humanity
The Aquarian Nature of the United Nations
[This world period]... must be dedicated to rebuilding the shrine of man's living, to reconstructing the form of humanity's life, to reconstituting the new civilisation upon the foundations of the old, and to the reorganising of the structures of world thought, world politics, plus the redistribution of the world's resources in conformity to divine purpose.
The Tibetan Master in The Destiny of the Nations, by Alice A. Bailey
Whether it is a looming crisis over Iran and its compliance with the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, continuing atrocities in Darfur, or the threat of an avian flu pandemic, people all over the world look to the United Nations to play a role in making peace, protecting civilians, improving livelihoods, promoting human rights and upholding international law. I have worked long and hard to transform the United Nations so that when called upon, as we are every day, we will deliver what is asked of us—effectively, efficiently and equitably.
A New Mindset for the United Nations,
We are once again at a pivotal point of world decision and once again, the United Nations provides the planetary fulcrum, stressing the need for diplomacy, dialogue and the way of reason instead of the way of war.
Meeting in Vienna, on February 4th, the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) passed a resolution requesting Dr. ElBaradei, the Agency's Director-General to report to the United Nations Security Council on the situation developing around Iran's stated plans to continue to develop its nuclear energy program.
As reported in the UN News Center (http://www.un.org/apps/news/story.asp?NewsID=17402&Cr=Iran&Cr1=), prior to the adoption of the resolution, Dr. ElBaradei said, “The draft resolution which is now before the Board (sponsored by Britain, France, Germany) says that we should report on that issue. But the sponsors made it clear that the Security Council is not expected to take any action at least before March.” He continued, "the period from now until then represents 'a window of opportunity' for diplomacy." Will the nations and peoples of the world use it as such?
However, undeterred and undiminished, the heroes, heroines and saviors of humanity battle on. More starkly and clearly aware of the obstacles in their way and the forces arrayed against the realization of the vision, they more purposefully, powerfully and intelligently embrace their work with renewed commitment and one-pointed dedication as they seek to eliminate all which stands in the way of a liberated humanity.
With this recent international spotlight on Iran's nuclear ambitions, in an address at the United Nations Association of the UK at Central Hall in Westminster, Secretary-General Kofi Annan warned against lurching from crisis to crisis on nuclear proliferation as he stressed the need to strengthen the UN's Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). (http://www.un.org/Depts/dda/WMD/treaty/)
He also provided an important global perspective, emphasizing the fact that what one perceives as a vital threat to one's survival depends on just where one lives in the world: "Depending on where you live and where you stand, your perception of threat is quite different. I live in America and if you were to ask me because of the way the press plays it and the speeches you hear, I would probably tell you terrorism is the most important threat. But if I go to South Africa, they would probably tell me HIV/AIDS. Someone else will tell me hunger. And if I lived on a small island, which could be washed away, I would tell you it is environmental degradation and climate."
Indeed, the world's only common house is called upon to solve all of life's critical problems for "we the peoples" of the world. From poverty, to infectious disease and environmental degradation, to conflict within and between States, to the spread of nuclear, radiological, chemical and biological weapons, to terrorism and transnational crime—the UN is engaged in daily heroic battles with these and other global threats. In attempting this Herculian effort, especially over the past year, the UN has sought to reform and transform itself so as to become a more flexible, effective and empowered organization.
Because of the voiceferous nature of its enemies, detractors, negators and critics, its efforts are often presented in the world media as feeble and anemic and they are dismissed by those who do not share in the UN's goals and vision of universal goodwill and right human relations.
Recognizing that increasingly, world public opinion fuels the events of the day, those of us who see clearly the spiritual purpose and potential of this planetary organization are faced with a compelling challenge and responsibility.
If we can avail ourselves of the opportunity, at this time of the year, the available cosmic, solar and planetary energies lend themselves to this very challenge.
This month we work with the energies of the sign of Aquarius. Under the influence of these energies, we have the opportunity to reconize the bond which holds all life together--subjectively and in truth, thus arriving at universal love. Filtered through the planet Uranus, the energies from the sign of Aquarius can produce those new conditions which will help the soul of humanity to express itself more freely. The service of the personality, the lower self can be transmuted into the service of humanity; superficial and selfish activity can be changed into a deep and active intention to be active on behalf of the Hierarchy of Love and Light; self-conscious living can be changed into a sensitive humanitarian awareness, allowing the individual to proceed from self-service, to world service.
These transformations are facilitated as we engage in the meditative process that brings about the capacity to be "impressed from on high" and to be illumined by the light of the soul. We thus invite you to join us in using the meditation “The Spiritual Work of the United Nations and the Liberation of Humanity”—weekly, every Friday as well as this Sunday, February 12th, when the energies of Aquarius will be at their peak on our planet.
Thanks to the dedicated and selfless work of several co-workers, a copy of the meditation outline is available in Spanish, Portuguese, Polish and English, and these monthly letters are also available in Spanish.
Work is continuing on the construction of the web forum through which you will be able to share your thoughts and planned activities evolving out of your use of reflective meditations on the spiritual work of the United Nations and we look forward to unveiling that service avenue soon.
