Opening and Introduction to the Seminar

Good Afternoon, Friends, Welcome. We have what I think will be an interesting program and we're delighted that you could join us.

I know you will share in my expression of appreciation and honor to welcome our very eminent and distinguished guests, Reverend and Dr. James A. Forbes, Jr. and Former Under-Secretary-General and High Representative of the United Nations Anwarul Chowdhury, who will be introduced to you shortly.

We are deeply sorry and regret to let you know that our fourth keynote speaker, Ambassador Maria Rubiales de Chamorro from the Permanent Mission of Nicaragua could not be with us today. We know several of you have registered for this seminar, especially because of her and the Mission of Nicaragua extends their deepest regrets, as do I. Unfortunately, she sustained a leg injury and is yet recuperating in Nicaragua. I know you will join me in wishing her a speedy recovery.

We are meeting today at a most auspicious and opportune time on this first day of the distribution of the energies of the Gemini Solar Festival, also observed since 1952 as World Invocation Day, the Festival of Goodwill and the Festival of Humanity about which I will say more later.

Within the stream of the beneficent and powerful energies today available on our planet, we look forward to our work this afternoon, as together, we consider the compelling question of this Seminar, which was inspired by the UN's recent focus on the revitalization of the General Assembly, the UN General Assembly resolution to declare 2009 as the International Year of Reconciliation and the Charter of the United Nations:

Interestingly, just a few days ago on June 11th, the Permanent Mission of Finland and The Rule of Law Unit in the Executive Office of the Secretary-General also held a seminar, entitled, "Harmonizing UN Action on the Rule of Law."

And, Pope Benedict who just this past April addressed the UN General Assembly also referred to this very same concept, saying that the people of the world expect the United Nations "to carry forward the founding inspiration to establish a 'centre for harmonizing the actions of nations.'"

And, so we do.

The actions of nations cannot be harmonized unless we each practice right human relations and so we wish to acknowledge, by use of the approved logo on your program agenda, that this year is the 60th anniversary of the UN Declaration of Human Rights.

Later this year, on United Nations Day, Friday, October 24th, a group of us will be organizing a seminar on the relationship between the science of meditation and the practice of human rights. We hope you will also join us at that meeting.

I would also like to mention that in our deliberations and strivings today, we will be joined subjectively by individuals and groups in New Zealand, Australia, Spain, Italy, France, Macedonia, Romania, several countries throughout Latin America, and in many localities throughout the United States.

In meditation, prayer and in discussion, our friends and co-workers will join with us as we seek to practice the science of Invocation and Evocation in order to bring healing, harmonizing energies into our United Nations and into our beleaguered world.

We have much good work to do this afternoon and I will now give the floor over to my colleague and good friend, Iris Spellings, who is an active Board Member of the Aquarian Age Community and who is also a Representative here at the UN for the NGO, Operation Peace Through Unity, based in New Zealand: Iris.
