I. The Supermundane World; The Hierarchy of Enlightened Beings
Though the subject of the occult Hierarchy of the planet is of such a profoundly momentous interest to the average man, yet its real significance will never be understood until men realise three things in connection with it. First, that the entire Hierarchy of spiritual beings represents a synthesis of forces or of energies, which forces or energies are consciously manipulated for the furtherance of planetary evolution. This will become more apparent as we proceed. Secondly, that these forces, demonstrating in our planetary scheme through those great Personalities Who compose the Hierarchy, link it and all that it contains with the greater Hierarchy which we call Solar. Our Hierarchy is a miniature replica of the greater synthesis of those self-conscious Entities who manipulate, control, and demonstrate through the sun and the seven sacred planets, as well as the other planets, greater and smaller, of which our solar system is composed. Thirdly, that this Hierarchy of forces has four pre-eminent lines of work:- To develop self-consciousness in all beings....To develop consciousness in the three lower kingdoms.... To transmit the will of the Planetary Logos....To set an example to humanity. Initiation, Human and Solar, pp. 20-24**
The Hierarchy (a name covering the working disciples of all degrees) has for hundreds of generations sought to aid humanity, and since the fifteenth century has steadily approached closer to the physical plane and sought to make a deeper impact on the human consciousness. This has resulted in a recognition which has in it (at this time) the seeds of world salvation. Until the fifteenth century, the pull and the magnetic appeal was from the side of the watching Elder Brothers. Today, so numerous are the inner and outer disciples, and so many are the world aspirants, the pull and the magnetic appeal are largely equalised, and what will happen in the world unfoldment and in the recognitions by the races will be the result of mutual interplay of the two intents (I am choosing my words with care)-the intent of the Masters to help humanity, and that of the world aspirants and disciples to aid in that helping.
Esoterically speaking, a point of contact, a moment of "spiritual intercourse," is imminent, and out of that moment a new world can be born.
If that can be brought about, then there can be re-established on earth the condition which was brought to an end in earlier days, when the Hierarchy (in order to further man's mental development) withdrew behind the scenes for a period. If this spiritual contact can be brought about, it means that the Hierarchy will no longer be hidden and unknown, but will be recognised as present upon the physical plane. This would at first be necessarily on a small scale, and the recognition will be confined to the aspirants and disciples. Increasingly the New Group of World Servers will be active in every nation and found functioning throughout the entire world.
The two thoughts which I seek to impress upon your minds are, first, the re-establishing of this closer relation, and secondly, the work of a practical kind that each of you can do to bring about this general recognition. I seek to emphasise the point that the final activity which will bring about this spiritual event must come from the outer plane of physical life. The Externalisation of the Hierarchy, pp. 20-21**
It is of course not possible for me to give you any true picture of the interior events and happenings in the life of our planetary Being. I can only indicate and point out that the world situation is simply an embodiment of the reaction and the response by mankind to great paralleling and originating happenings which involve the following groups:
A study of the above in terms of forces and energy will give some idea of the underlying synthesis of relationships and the unity of the whole.
There is therefore a line of descending energy which has its origin outside our planetary life altogether; the inflow of this energy, its inevitable effect under cyclic law and its consequences, as they work out upon the physical plane, has produced and is producing all the changes of which mankind is so terribly aware at this time. This swings into immediate conflict the past and the future. The Rays and the Initiations , p. 13**
Urusvati knows that the Supermundane should be accepted as a natural aspect of life. Listen! Listen! As long as the Supermundane is thought of as forbidden or supernatural, the consciousness will not be able to expand. It can be observed, though, that some people, when attempting to turn to the Supermundane, lose their balance, because their earthly limitations prevent proper communion with It.
Some may ask how one can turn to the Supermundane without causing harm to the physical body. They wonder whether, for an ordinary person, it is not destructive to mix earthly and subtle energies. Such an idea is mistaken. The mundane and supermundane worlds are interconnected in many subtle ways. To destroy these links would mean to destroy the planet. But one should not think that cognition of the Supermundane is available only to exceptional individuals. Everyone who begins to contemplate the Supermundane will become illumined by this wondrous and beautiful aspect of life. Supermundane III: 620*
Most people are not able to make the idea of the Subtle World a part of their lives, and thus they obstruct evolution. It is difficult to reveal to the earthly consciousness that the Subtle World is the true source of events in the earthly world. Whole decades can pass between an event in the Subtle World and its counterpart in the physical world, even though by being formed in the Subtle World it became inevitable. Supermundane IV: 703*
Verily, the cosmic Origins are wondrous in their might, and the creative law of Hierarchy imbues all with fire. Therefore, at the base of the entire Cosmos lies the law of the great unification of the highest fires. Hence all great designations should not be dissociated. And the foundation of the future, the radiant Hierarchy of Bliss, is indeed intensified in the assertion of great laws. Verily, it must be remembered that one can build only through Hierarchy. One may be in the orbit affirmed by Hierarchy only when the consciousness understands that a blow upon the Shield of the Name of the Hierarch is a blow at Us, and each one permitting a blow pays dearly. Thus, in unity lies the success of all works. The admittance of depreciation is an evidence of faint-heartedness and defection. Unity is a wondrous fire! Hierarchy: 361*
The recognition of Hierarchy is not a formal discipline, but a conscious cooperation. Once the spirit realizes that it has joined an endless chain of "dynamos," it receives a special right to move onward. However, just as oarsmen must follow the directions of the helmsman, so must the admitted co-workers follow the call of the Teacher. One must think in every way about economy of energy.
Our own Leaders have entrusted to Us the vessel to quench the conflagrations of evil, and We relay this mission to chosen emissaries, entrusting to them the task of further transmission. Recognition of Hierarchy facilitates movement into the Infinite. Agni Yoga: 43*
There is no light or dark to the soul but only existence and love. Rest back on that. There is no separation but only identification with the heart of all love; the more you love the more love can reach out through you to others. The chains of love unite the world of men and the world of forms and they constitute the great chain of Hierarchy. The spiritual effort you are asked to make is that of developing yourself into a vibrant and powerful centre of that fundamental, universal Love. Discipleship in the New Age, Vol. II, p. 30**
Christ taught also that the Kingdom of God is on Earth and told us to seek that Kingdom first and let all things go for its sake. That Kingdom has ever been with us, composed of all those who, down the ages, have sought spiritual goals, liberated themselves from the limitations of the physical body, emotional controls and the obstructive mind. Its citizens are those who today (unknown to the majority) live in physical bodies, work for the welfare of humanity, use love instead of emotion as their general technique, and compose that great body of "illumined Minds" which guide the destiny of the world. The Kingdom of God is not something which will descend on earth when men are good enough! It is something which is functioning efficiently today and demanding recognition. It is an organised body which is already evoking recognition from those people who do seek first the Kingdom of God and discover thereby that the Kingdom they seek is already here. Christ and His disciples are known by many to be physically present on Earth and the Kingdom which They rule, with its laws and modes of activity are familiar to many, and have been throughout the centuries. The Reappearance of the Christ, pp. 603-604**
Let us not forget that there is nothing on Earth higher than the given Plan for the Common Good. Let us manifest understanding of the Teachings of life. As Moses brought forth human dignity, as Buddha impelled toward the broadening of consciousness, as Christ taught the good of giving, so now the New World is directed toward the far-off worlds! New Era Community: 81*
Our Teaching is so powerful because Our Words enter into life as wondrous affirmations. Thus do Our Words live, for the creative impulse is saturated by the power of Fire. Only when Our Advice is applied in life can the higher step be taken.
Why is your mission so effective? Because it carries within it Our pledge of Cooperation. Thus We affirm Hierarchy based upon the law of succession. When the Cosmic Law is realized, a true understanding of the Chain of Hierarchy is established. Thus, the one who better fulfills his tasks will be closer to Hierarchy The Hierarchy of Service is but the manifestation of the fulfillment of an even Higher Will. Only in this way do We affirm the Law of Hierarchy. And thus does Cosmic Law enter life. Agni Yoga: 659*
One should not estrange oneself from the earthly, yet one must abide in spirit. For the mastery of the earthly formulae, one must possess a strong channel of the heart, because the reflex of the earthly signs carries dangerous sparks. But for Earth, all must be accomplished upon the earthly plane. Therein is the chief reason for the existence of the Brotherhood here. Therefore, upon Earth one must reach Us, discover Us, as silver ore-the best beneath the earthly crust. Leaves of Morya's Garden II (Illumination), Part 2:I: 8*
II. The Fiery Heart
The Lofty Beings do wish to give hints toward a great many things, but the mental distraction of people prevents these precious Counsels from reaching them. Not only in sendings from the Subtle World but also in earthly existence, parables have been adopted, as a means of indirect indication. But history sets forth many instances of non-acceptance of the most urgent counsels. Not without reason was attentiveness so developed in antiquity; it even constituted a study in itself. But nowadays not many understand the significance of vigilance; for others guidance is required in the sharpest, and repeated, instructions, which cannot but have an effect on Karma. But only the fiery heart will comprehend the hidden meaning of subtle signs. Let the co-workers grasp the fact that each sign has its destination. So many Lofty Beings send supplications and hope that they will be understood. There have been whole epochs when the subtle understanding was strengthened and sharpened, but later a bloody mist condensed anew, and the refined perceptions became coarse. Just now many attempts from the best Strata of the Subtle World are being rendered futile by the dark forces. Fiery World II : 178*
Urusvati knows how lightning-fast, resounding spirals of thought envelope the planet. The resulting sheathe can be either beneficial or harmful. Through free will man can cause healing or destruction. Man cannot say that he suffers without cause. It is man himself who at some point in the past introduced poison into the cosmic fabric.
Cosmic soundings are already being studied and it is understood that every thought, every word expressed by man is engraved on indestructible tablets. The time is coming when human thought must be studied. It is quicker than light, and forms a tenacious cover over the Earth. But how often are thoughts benevolent?
People already know how to grasp the superficial expression of thought, but are not yet fully capable of understanding its meaning. In the future, there will be sensitive apparatuses that can record the precise meaning of a thought. People whose thoughts are devoted to the Common Good will rejoice at this research, but all those who live in hatred, malice, lies, and envy, will oppose it by all means. The scientist with enough resolve to conduct the research leading to this discovery will hardly be called a friend by contemporary humanity.
Simple is the admonishment that one should not live in hatred, but the proclamations of today's leaders often encourage it. They do not know the power of thought and of karma. He who thinks that evil can be exterminated by evil is gravely mistaken. Even the horror of war cannot be stopped by hatred. It is noble thoughts that will save mankind. Heroism is shaped not by hatred, but by fiery good will.
To behold with the eyes of the heart; to listen with the ears of the heart of the roar of the world; to peer into the future with the comprehension of the heart; to remember the cumulations of the past through the heart; thus must one impetuously advance upon the path of ascent. Creativeness encompasses the fiery potentiality, and is impregnated with the sacred fire of the heart. Therefore, upon the path to the Hierarchy, upon the path of Great Service, upon the path of Communion, synthesis is the one luminous path of the heart. How can the manifested rays be radiated if the flame is not affirmed in the heart? It is precisely the quality of the magnet that is inherent in the heart. The highest creativeness is imbued with this great law. Hence, each consummation, each union, each great cosmic unification is achieved through the flame of the heart. By what means can the foundation of the great steps be laid? Verily, only through the heart. Thus the arcs of consciousness are fused by the flame of the heart. Heart: 1*
Urusvati knows that one approaches the Supermundane World not so much through reason as through love. Great is the magnetic power of the feeling of love, but, regrettably, science does not know the true significance of this magnet. A loving man responds to the cosmic law of attraction, and thus receives special qualities which are characteristic of this law.
It is possible to sharpen one's insight and be imbued with valor, to become ready for podvig. Even one's health is improved when the mind and heart are turned toward exalted thinking.
It is incorrect to assume that people who are subject to so-called hysteria can more easily commune with the Supermundane World. They do tend to mediumship, but We desire another approach, wholesome and goalfitting. The perfect path will be love for the Supermundane World.
It is impossible without love to gain knowledge of the Supermundane. It is impossible to approach only through reading. An intensified will is needed, but this will can be developed only through love.
Also, We advise you not to separate yourself from earthly life, for this life is given to us as our field of battle. One can test oneself only in life, and all such tests will be beautiful if they are under a dome of love for the Supermundane World. Supermundane IV: 736*
Many conditions of the heart, from soft-heartedness to cruelty, have been marked by the observation of people, but rarely has fiery-heartedness been emphasized. Yet it is precisely this quality that should preoccupy and attract our attention. It is difficult not to fear the black assembly, but no one can prevail over the fiery heart. Let them invent various threats, but one pillar of Light will overthrow all darkness. Heart: 183*
"Are there not traits of egoism in the state of ecstasy, the state of Samadhi?" The ignoramus will ask this question. How could he know that this supreme state is not only unrelated to selfhood but antithetical to it! How could one who has never experienced the highest tension apprehend that that, precisely, carries the highest Bliss for the General Welfare! Nothing gives birth to such pure abnegation of self as that induced by the exultation of the brimming heart. Which of the human energies can compare with the energy of the heart, and which of the energies can act at long distances? The worlds have no boundaries for it and consciousness knows no limitations. Thus, a window can be cut through into the Invisible. But, as was said, the Invisible will become visible and we shall be ready to apply the Fiery Baptism in life. Therefore, let us give due regard to the significance of the experiment performed by the Mother of Agni Yoga here, without abandoning life. From the first spatial sparks, through all fires up to Samadhi, she will leave writings which will become the threshold of the New World. Therefore, I speak not only of tension but also of great caution. Armageddon does not lighten the conditions of ascent; what was achieved is therefore the more valuable.
Thus, I say, learn to hearken to the fiery heart. Do not doubt that which is purified by Fire. Wise is the revelation of the foundations of the heart in life; and how greatly one ought to rejoice at this rock of Good. Heart: 210*
With justice people turn to the science of astrology, but without the fiery heart they may find themselves in an impassable jungle. Thus let us remember the heart, otherwise speaking, the Hierarchy. Fiery World II : 115*
Yes, the heart of the Arhat is like the Heart of the Cosmos. But wherein is contained the sunlike quality of the heart of the Arhat? We say-in love, but not in that aspect of love to which humanity likes to limit it; nor yet in that benevolent love which people ascribe to a Patriarch. No, the sunlike heart of the Arhat propels into achievement and smites everything corrupting. The Heart of the Arhat contends with darkness and affirms fiery striving.
With what, then, is the Heart of the Arhat fed? We say-with love. Only this Source knows how to saturate the fiery heart. The great Mother of the World knows this Source. Each pure heart knows this Source. How, then, are the hearts co merged? We say-with love, that powerful source which converts life into a manifestation of beauty, that source which contains all the subtle energies of the heart. The Heart of the Arhat is a secret stronghold, which guards the sacred gift of the Cosmos. And not outside of life but in the very depths of life is forged the Heart of the Arhat. Let us say, by love. Yes, yes, yes, thus saith the Lord of Shambhala. Fiery World III: 171*
Some people seek the higher link by continually uttering a mantra, at first orally, then mentally. Yet they forget that the most powerful link is through the fire of the heart, an illumination that needs no words or thoughts. It lives in the fiery heart, and nothing can break this sacred bond.
The excessive burden is accepted voluntarily only by the fiery heart. Let us be these fiery hearts, let us accept the greater burden, which will bring us sooner to liberation. And while those who did not accept the whole burden will have to return for the part left behind, we shall, with all the joy of our hearts, fulfill the next coming task. Let nobody be so low as to allow himself to count his contributions or so-called sacrifices. This would be equal to the blocking of the path. All real contributions and sacrifices are weighed on the innermost scales of conscience which exist in everyone. Letters of Helena Roerich, Vol. I , 6 October 1932*
Only from the heart centre can stream, in reality, those lines of energy which link and bind together. It was for this reason that I have assigned certain meditations which stimulated the heart into action, linking the heart centre (between the shoulder blades) to the head centre, through the medium of the higher correspondence to the heart centre, found within the head centre (the thousand petalled lotus). This heart centre, when adequately radiatory and magnetic, relates disciples to each other and to all the world. It will also produce that telepathic interplay which is so much to be desired and which is so constructively useful to the spiritual Hierarchy-provided it is established within a group of pledged disciples, dedicated to the service of humanity. They can then be trusted. Discipleship in the New Age, Vol. I, p. 87**
As the Bible says: "the love of God is shed abroad" in the human heart, and its transforming, magnetic and radiatory power is essential for the reconstruction of the world and for the establishment of the new world order. Upon the unfoldment of the heart centre, and on an intelligent relation of mankind to the Hierarchy, with the consequent response of man to the energy of love, all disciples are asked at this time to ponder and reflect, for as a "man thinketh in his heart, so is he." Thinking in the heart becomes truly possible only when the mental faculties have been adequately developed and have reached a fairly high stage of unfoldment. Feeling in the heart is often confused with thinking. The ability to think in the heart is the result of the process of transmuting desire into love during the task of elevating the forces of the solar plexus into the heart centre. Heart thinking is also one of the indications that the higher aspect of the heart centre, the twelve-petalled lotus found at the very centre of the thousand-petalled lotus, has reached a point of real activity. Thinking as a result of correct feeling is then substituted for personal sensitivity. It gives us the first faint indications; likewise, of [Page 158] that state of being which is characteristic of the monad and which cannot be called consciousness-as we understand the term. Esoteric Healing, pp. 157-58**
When the Christ founds His focal point on Earth, it will be in the nature of a tiny heart centre through which the love energy of the Hierarchy can persistently flow. The harmony (which the Principle of Conflict produces) causes an alignment, so that the love-streaming forth from the Heart of God-enters the hearts of men; so that the Hierarchy (which is the heart centre or the place where love prevails upon our planet) is brought into relationship with humanity; so that the New Group of World Servers (implementing the love of God and enlightened by the Mind of God) are brought also into relation with the [Page 619] men and women of goodwill in all lands whose task it is to make men's hearts responsive to and receptive of the love of God; this is another way of saying receptive to the consciousness of the Christ.
This alignment is now in process of being made; it will be brought about automatically when the effectiveness of the Principle of Conflict in producing liberation is generally recognised. Thus the hearts of men, the heart of the planet, i.e., the Hierarchy, and the heart of the Hierarchy, the Christ, are in a state of positive contact; when this channel is open and unobstructed, then the Christ will come. Nothing can stop His appearance and-under law-He may not turn His back upon the presented opportunity. The Rays and the Initiations , pp. 618-19**
Heartlessness is nothing save an uncultured condition of the heart. Faint-heartedness is a limitation of thinking. Intolerance belongs to the same family of abominations which impoverish the sacred vessel of the heart. You know already that the subtle, intensified heart creates an impetus like a dynamo, thus proving that it is a vessel of universal energy. But the culture of the heart is not accumulated if it does not receive proportionate nourishment; likewise the best accumulator is inactive without protection and correct connection. The heart demands constant nourishment, otherwise, deprived of the highest link, it decays. Heart: 9*
Urusvati knows how difficult is the transference of thought over a distance. Many conditions may affect it. Man is either like a boiling kettle or a radiant discus thrower, propelling thought into space. One should not only control oneself, but should also foresee the chemical reactions that in their contradiction may interfere with a strong will.
We are often reproached about why at times We interrupt Our sendings of thought. Our earthly friends do not realize that during such intervals We guard not Ourselves, but them. We know how to sense spatial tension and protect Our friends who are in an earthly state.
Do not think that superficial methods will produce complete results. The most essential is in the depths of one's consciousness. An impure servitor cannot perform a pure action, and the most sanctioned ritual cannot free him from impure thinking. Thus, many err, supposing that outward rituals will compensate for inner abominations.
Urusvati knows how often even the simplest of Our Indications are distorted. For example, We spoke about the need to carefully attend to the protection of our friends, and to provide help when necessary. It would seem that such advice is quite clear, but people often will see in this an opportunity to criticize their friends. Wherever the worm of condemnation breeds, one cannot expect a harvest.
Now let us understand the difference between condemnation and fair judgment. Everyone knows that there are crimes for which a severe judgment is deserved, but ordinary, everyday criticism is superficial and harmful. Often, when criticizing others, people attempt to compel them to act as they would wish them to. They do not want to understand that each bird has its own song and that it is wrong to force it to sing an alien tune. One can even kill the singer, but nothing will be gained.
It is regrettable to see how people impose their will on others, and it is even worse when these violations are committed in the name of Good. When We speak about concern for the protection of our friends, We have in mind the most solicitous care, and not tactless criticism. It is time to understand that it is wrong to poison the atmosphere with thoughtless criticism, which is akin to slander. All imposition of the will is an obstacle in communion with Us.
We have spoken about supermundane feelings, which, in their subtlety, can be transmitted to great distances. Can one admit coarseness into the Subtle Abode? Mutual help must be built upon the foundation of the loving heart. When people understand the power of the welcoming heart, they will learn one more path to Us.
Urusvati knows that people should not only acknowledge the existence of the subtle energies, but should also work with them. Must one be some kind of giant to even think about such cooperation? In a well-designed machine each of its parts is necessary. One should more often imagine oneself as part of the Universe, by joining one's own energy with the universal energy.
Thought is the finest energy that one can send forth, inexhaustibly, into the vault of the Universe. Thought can rise, as a pillar of light, and be united with the great Apparatus of energy. The duty of man is to share his possessions, and the best of them is the energy of his thought. It is the energy, consciously directed, that serves as a true yoga, the link with the Higher Worlds. We have spoken many times about the significance of awareness; it alone is life-giving. Even prana must be inhaled consciously.
Urusvati knows the true meaning of auto-suggestion. Many regard this concept with disdain, but proper auto-suggestion is a true staff on both earthly and supermundane paths.
People should understand that self-command toward good and the General Welfare will attract Supermundane Help, and victory will come when one commands oneself to overcome the obstacles. Such a victory through self-command shortens the path. It also should be known that in a beneficent command vibrations are created that unite one with the Higher Forces. But even such simple ideas must almost be forced into the human consciousness. Man pictures only dimly his best gift-free will. He does not realize the responsibility this advantage places upon him. How will he make use of free will if he does not understand the power of self-command?
It was said long ago that man should first of all conquer himself, but what kind of victory would it be if man were not imbued with the will to good? Let us remember that auto-suggestion is truly a scientific concept. Everyone, under any conditions, can develop it, and the Supermundane Dwellers will rejoice at seeing new possibilities for cooperation.
The Thinker said, "Friend, light your lamp. Welcome guests will appear." Supermundane IV: 867.
Urusvati knows that the inner life of those who labor for Us is founded upon various forms of inner discipline. Independence of action, courage, goalfitness, tirelessness, compassion, reverence for Hierarchy, and many other qualities are developed diligently and consciously. One cannot imagine leading a sensible life if it is still subject to chaotic behavior. Supermundane III: 546*
Do not be disturbed by this cry from your inner being, for therein is contained a unique link with Hierarchy. You did not ask for riches or honors. Your being, expressing itself in that one word, said, 'Guide me!' You did not make any conditions, but simply wanted to say, 'Do what is best.' You are confident that all will be done for the good, and if you do not recognize at once which is the right way, you are nevertheless confident that the best measures will be taken. Supermundane III: 489*
Urusvati knows that the mundane and the Supermundane are in essence the same, because every earthly action is linked to all of existence. But when We speak about the foundations of life We call them supermundane. People should be taught by all possible means that the Supermundane is real, but man fears the Supermundane and tries to escape the grandeur of Infinity by burying his head here on Earth.
There are many beliefs by which people shield themselves from reality, and it is therefore necessary to goad humanity into participating in all aspects of life. Many ancient thinkers emphasized this, but unfortunately their advice came down in the form of maxims which today are read, but never applied. The thoughts of Confucius, Pythagoras, and Marcus Aurelius are recorded in the pages of history, yet the average man is loathe to accept their authority. People are ashamed to reveal the cause of their ignorance, therefore it is important to persist in reminding them about participating in the totality of life.
Many wish to be called Our co-workers, but for this they must learn to think in unison with Us. They may cooperate to different degrees, but there should be no room for distrust. First of all, the Teacher must find out how much the thinking of the disciple is purified and free of misconceptions. Only then can he be guided to the truth, and only then will mundane and Supermundane be understood as aspects of one whole. Supermundane II: 310*
One should be reminded of those who overcame superhuman obstacles, and understand the complexity of the circumstances that surrounded them. History did not record all the dangers that threatened them from near and far. People suppose that heroic deeds are performed spontaneously, without preparation, but in reality many thoughts must take form before a firm decision to carry out a selfless act can be made.
The most valiant heroes have recollections from early childhood, when they had visions and dreams and heard voices that called to them and led them. Certain ideas were formed during their childhood that manifested much later. Heroes can describe how certain invisible forces directed their actions, and how they at times would spontaneously utter words whose meaning they did not understand until later. Thus, Our influence flows to many co-workers and strengthens their courage. We appreciate the gratitude We receive for the constant care that We bestow upon heroes.
Our Abode is the focal point of stout-hearted decisions. But We have to practice great patience so that these decisions do not interfere with free will. Thus, with regard to Our patience, We can be considered examples.
Not all potential heroes will reach their goal, because their free will often rebels against their own determined decision. But if people realized how ardently We try to help them succeed, they would see how beneficial it is to cooperate with Us. Then podvig will be kindled, and felt as the highest joy. Supermundane I: 98*
Verily, the Earth is to be saved by earthly hands, and the Heavenly Forces are sending the best manna; but if ungathered it is transformed into dew. How then not to rejoice when gatherers are found? When, ignoring derision, these seekers proceed, remembering Our Shield. New Era Community: 53*
To each one is entrusted the finding of the path to the higher sphere; but when humanity thinks that the work designated for the transmutation of the spirit and of all accumulations can proceed from without, then the lever of Cosmos will devastate the accumulation. Only by one's own hand, only by one's own will, only by one's own striving, only by one's own work can the spirit become a conscious co-worker of the Infinite. Infinity I: 33*
You are right that "to understand Agni Yoga completely and to apply it in life is not a task for everybody." But without application in life, knowledge is worthless and will not give the expected results. The first formulae which a disciple should assimilate are the following: "All for life-nothing should be abstract; all should be done by human hands and human feet; without the tension of all forces, no transmutation (or perfection) is possible." We all know that in physical and chemical experiments new formulae are born only at the edge of greatest tension. Therefore, using the great analogy which exists in Cosmos we must continually strive and intensify all our abilities.
First of all, the Teaching requires independence of action from the disciple. The Teaching gives direction, generously giving the precious hints, but the disciple must himself "with his own hands and feet" build his path. Therefore, do not expect ready-made formulae. From small hints build the great structure. Letters of Helena Roerich, Vol. I , 1929-1935, 28 August 193*
One may inquire how to name the method of the Teaching. It may be called the method of opening of the ways. Consider next the opening of the centers. Inner feeling must be prompt as to how carefully one should safeguard the individuality. Least suitable of all is the system of the usual lectures.
There may be calls to the multitude, but construction proceeds by the way of individual discourses. One of Our Teachers usually would just begin a proposition, leaving it to the disciple to complete the thought. Thus He built up a free interchange of thought.
The principle of freedom of approach, freedom of service, freedom of labor must be safeguarded. The manifestation of burden at the beginning is only a sign of imperfection. Affirmation of the manifestation of wisdom will be in the steadfast landmarks surrounding the projected figure of knowledge.
Our goal is not to be Teachers, but Co-Workers. But for this there is needed a firm realization that through mutuality absolutely everything will be brought to useful fruition. When signs of such allegiance are evident, then the mastery of the physical world is at hand.
In earthly churches people invoke Christ and wonder at His silence; whilst you perceive how one can resurrect Him amidst earthly life, without putting on a sackcloth and disturbing the space with discontent. Thus are the great Designs forged. Leaves of Morya's Garden II (Illumination): Part 2: VII: 9*
The Yogi serves as a living link with the Supermundane World; this honorable cooperation is not easy. Chaotic earthly accumulations cause pain and exhaustion beyond measure. But the Yogi is a true sacrificer and knows that the Common Good is not achieved easily. As a sensible manager of his resources, he does not allow overfatigue. He knows that all extremes should be avoided. He will immediately inhale the prana and give rest to his organism. This rest will not be a lengthy one, for the Supermundane World hastens to replenish the loss of energy. The Thinker said, "We give and thus receive. We sacrifice and thus enrich ourselves." Supermundane IV, 94
Urusvati knows how difficult it is at times to transmit thought to far-off distances. It is especially difficult to penetrate the layers between the spheres, which can prevent even the most clear-cut thought from entering, and cause it to merely glide over the surface. In certain examples one can observe that the thought is unable to penetrate the personal aura of the recipient. This evidence is overlooked by investigators who assume that thought transmission depends upon the power of the sender, ignoring the important factor of the individual quality of emanations of the recipient. One should consider not only the size of the aura, but learn its contents as well. Supermundane I: 184*
Urusvati knows that heroism is an expression of self-sacrifice and fiery enthusiasm. When performing a heroic deed, one's vibrations are raised, awareness of physical sensations disappears, and the entire being is filled with a fiery insight.
Only the unknowing would ask-why speak about heroism when discussing the Supermundane? They do not understand that striving toward the Supermundane is itself an act of heroism. They do not know that each thought about the Supermundane raises the vibrations and fills the consciousness with fiery striving.
If the thought is weak, its effect will be negligible, but a clear-cut, strong thought has powerful effects. It must be said repeatedly that thought about the Supermundane produces healing vibrations. Also one should remind often about the importance of exalted thinking. Soon physicians will recommend, in cases of psychic imbalance, thought about the Supermundane. The first attempts will be primitive, and the people will not fully recognize the importance of such communion, but even the smallest drop of this panacea will produce beneficial results. Indeed, thinking about the Supermundane is in itself a panacea.
It is not an exaggeration to say that people carry within themselves a talisman, but this would first require that they experience the exaltation connected with thought about the Supermundane. A man walking without his staff may stumble, but a strong staff can be given from Above. It must be accepted for the brave ascent to continue.
Urusvati knows how great earthly achievements could be if true collaboration were practiced.
...earthly egoism makes cooperation impossible. Yet, without cooperation, how can one hope to learn about the higher spheres? It is essential to recognize the higher realms, and to begin thinking about them, so as to revive the memory of the entrusted grains of Goodness. One should recall that in the early dawn of mankind it was ordained that subtle and beautiful ideas be brought to Earth. Indeed, everyone who is ready to incarnate is instructed to fulfill a task for the Common Good according to his individual capacity. Each one may reject these instructions in the whirlpool of free will, but someday will have to return to pick up the scattered grains. Supermundane I: 105*
Urusvati knows that a crude thought can forever drive away a beautiful, subtle thought. One can ask, "Is it possible? How rough the force must be to drive away a supermundane thought!" But the effect of the dense on the supermundane is obvious.
One would be astonished to see how the supermundane guest flies away from a crude touch. People do not value supermundane messages. They cannot imagine how much labor is needed for the Supermundane Friends to push a thought through dense, earthly matter. The Supermundane Friends seek the best atmospheric conditions to better transmit their messages. They wait for a time when the earthly dwellers can open their psychic ears in a calm mood. But, even if the best conditions are present, some messenger from the bazaar can appear, and the most subtle thought is driven away.
People brush away Our messages as if they were annoying flies. They complain that some kind of nonsense has come into their heads, not realizing that Supermundane Friends are trying to save them from misfortune. They will not admit that someone is trying to help them solve difficult problems in their lives. The earthly mind cannot imagine the cooperation that exists beyond the boundaries of Earth.
It is difficult for Supermundane Friends to send messages to Earth, even the most urgent ones. Evil scoffers do what they can to outrun a good thought. Unfortunately, the recipient is often inclined to listen to their cunning voices. The consciousness of the recipient is rarely developed and refined enough to distinguish the quality of the message. The concerns of everyday life obscure the Voice of Silence. Thus, it is difficult for Us and other Supermundane Friends, when people turn a deaf ear to Us and prefer the bazaar.
The Thinker instructed His disciples, "Be on guard day and night. You do not know the moment when a supermundane message will come to you. It is possible that you will drive it away!" Supermundane III: 617*
The initiate is responsive to planetary, systemic and certain cosmic influences and becomes-if I might so express it-a lens through which "the many lights which are energy itself" can stream and thus be focussed upon our planet. To these energies, the initiate tunes his consciousness and thus becomes a planetary server. Esoteric Astrology , p. 269**
Students need to remember that ....the Great Ones are looking for intelligent cooperators and workers.....The light of his soul will reveal to the earnest aspirant the unity underlying all groups, and enable him to eliminate the poison of intolerance which taints and hinders so many; it will cause him to recognise the spiritual fundamentals which guide the steps of humanity...it will enable him to estimate truly the esoteric value of service and teach him above all to practice that harmlessness which is the outstanding quality of every son of God. A harmlessness that speaks no word that can damage another person, that thinks no thought which could poison or produce misunderstanding, and which does no action which could hurt the least of his brethren-this is the main virtue which will enable the esoteric student to tread with safety the difficult path of development. The Externalisation of the Hierarchy, pp. 19-21**
Urusvati knows that Our Teaching is inexhaustible, just as is My care for you. But no care can be fruitful without cooperation. Cooperation grows wondrously when there is undivided striving. The coming together of energies generates the needed fruitful spark. These sparks are indicators of advancement; success in labor depends upon them. Once again let us affirm the importance of labor.
It is particularly sad for Us when people speak about wasted labor, because no labor disappears, and all labor produces its harvest. But do not decide on the expected time of such a harvest beforehand, for a harvest can be gathered only long after the seeds have been laid in the ground.
The labor of learning must be honored, because all knowledge adds to the expansion of consciousness. It is an error to think that only spiritual or philosophical labor can contribute to the growth of consciousness. Remember that the labor of learning is a kind of motion, in which the consciousness expands.
Cosmos continuously unfolds, and the consciousness of the microcosm unfolds also. Truly, it can be said, "On any path toward the Supermundane I will meet Thee." It is impossible to foretell which of the approaching ones will outstrip the others in his quest. For everyone a word of encouragement will be found.
The hypocrites and the cunning ones multiply, because they have no idea of the Supermundane. They do not understand that in lying they primarily deceive themselves. People cannot subsist on abstractions. Explanations of virtue should be based on scientific foundations, defined in terms of the human organism itself. The time is coming when even the loftiest concepts will be proven by science.
There is no need to fear that humane ideas will suffer when contacted by the realms of science; on the contrary, one can only foresee a broader expansion of consciousness. We can only welcome those scientists who will study the moral foundations of humanity from the point of view of physiology and other sciences, and thus explain the functioning of the microcosm. Then, at last, man will be able to reflect upon the true workings of the nations.
Let us not forget that even in ancient times voices were calling for the organizing of society according to principles of community. Unfortunately, every attempt to renew the consciousness in this way was undermined by the opposition of ignorance.
Even so, nations are drawing closer to a manifest, essential reconstruction of the world. This reconstruction is based on the same ancient principles, though new terms may be used for them. Thus the renewal of the world is hastening. It could have taken place bloodlessly, but the human consciousness had not yet assimilated the principles of humaneness.
The Thinker said, "People are social beings, and must ponder the building of a humane state." We can now recall how the Thinker dreamt about a state founded upon higher principles. Supermundane III: 698*
Speaking symbolically-when the United Nations has emerged into factual and actual power, the welfare of the world will then be assured. What is that welfare but love in action? What are right human relations but love among men, groups and nations? What is international cooperation but love on a world scale? The Externalisation of the Hierarchy, p. 603**
