The Great Eternity and the Continuity of Consciousness In the Age of Aquarius
Why is Earth in a state of illness? Because the rays of the planets cannot penetrate the contaminated aura. Into what will man be reduced if he ceases his intercourse with the supreme consciousness and sinks into the basest ignorance? From the Raj planet to the microcosm, the law is one. Losing the realization of the great worlds, people have wandered away from the understanding of perfection. The worlds have become for them a mad dream; and their self-perfectment has become an unnecessary and perilous pastime. Slaving for the daily wage, people hope only for the end of the way.…Fearless, testing, indefatigable, the yogi must help humanity to remember the law of Unity."
[Agni Yoga (245), Agni Yoga Society]

The Buddha taught that the enlightened state of Bodhi, which allows for the designation of Buddha, could be attained by purely human means. As a result of His strenuous striving, motivated by His great love for humanity, and His unceasing search for the cause of suffering, He arrived at the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Noble Path. If followed with dedication and concentration, this Path enables the human being to pierce the veils that hide the glories of "the Great Eternity."

The Christ, the "Anointed One"—the initial definition of the designation, "Christ", also left humanity with certain principles, ideas and practices that when understood and observed would, as he said, make it possible for humanity to do "Greater works" than His.

Just as the Buddha and the Christ achieved, so too, in varying degrees, have other "sons and daughters of God" achieved. The Great Eternity and the Continuity of Consciousness has ever existed and will continue to exist. Our experience of these is a matter of searching and fitting ourselves to attune to these higher (deeper) states of consciousness.

Unfortunately, the bulk of humanity yet dwells in a restricted reality, oppressed and shackled by the focus of its consciousness. What is it that obscures humanity's perception of the Great Eternity? What is it that blinds humanity to the supreme consciousness? The Agni Yoga wisdom answers succinctly: "The aspiration of humanity is drowned in earthly desires." And, further, "waves of gross desires impair each zone of light, and each instant reveals oceans of unrestrained lusts." [Fiery World III, (126)]

I shall try to express the deepest objective of the Brotherhood, so that you can understand and cooperate. Humanity is intended to act as a power house through which certain types of divine energy can flow to the various forms of life found in the subhuman kingdoms. This flow of energy must be intelligently apprehended and intelligently directed, and thus will be brought to an end conditions of decay and of death now prevalent everywhere. Thus mankind can link the higher and the lower manifestations of Life, but this will be possible only when men themselves have (within themselves) linked their higher and their lower aspects. This is, and should be, one of the objectives of all esoteric training. Men are intended to acquire the facility to function freely in either direction, and so with ease contact the life of God as it flows through those forms we call superhuman, and those which are subhuman. Such is the emerging goal.

From the benchmarks laid down by those who have traveled the Path of Achievement, we know that developing the ability to touch and commune with the higher levels of consciousness requires definite planned conditions, a love of humanity and a concerted commitment to serve the Common Good. Certain other factors must also be present. If they don't exist, then the higher currents are deflected and contact fails of accomplishment. For example, if the focus of attention is only on the physical plane life and if that is the dominating desire of which a person is most aware, the higher contact will go unrealized. Additionally, if emotional or mental chaos exists, then again the currents are deflected and the brain makes no record of that which may be inwardly seen and heard. Other factors, which thwart the contact with the higher consciousness, include extreme fatigue as well as a lack of vitality.

It is obvious therefore, that the evolution of consciousness is a voluntary process. It cannot be gifted nor can it be imposed and people cannot be forced to evolve spiritually. It is always and completely a self-initiated effort. From time immemorial the means have ever been the same—occult meditation and service; the inner life of concentration and the outer life of practice; the inner ability to contact the higher, and the outer ability to express that faculty in terms of consecrated living; the inner irradiation from the Great Eternity, and the outer radiation towards objective life.
