Peace and Right Human Relations
in the Age of Aquarius

Let humanity constitute your field of service, and may it be said of you that you knew the spiritual facts and were a dynamic part of these spiritual events; may it not be said of you that you knew these things and did nothing about them and failed to exert yourself. Let not time slip by as you work.1

WHO TODAY is not aware of the description of the Age of Aquarius as the age of brotherhood, of unity cooperation, and of the "mind's true liberation"? However, to watch the evening news or read the daily newspapers, such a description of the Age into which we are moving, seems but a fanciful dream. Yet, increasingly and in every walk of life, the dream is held out as an actual possibility and one that can be sought intelligently, albeit with resoluteness, discipline and great heart.

Many by now have read the story circulated on the Internet of the wise Native American Grandfather who enlightened his grandson by answering the question, "Grandfather, how will I know which of the wolves competing in my heart will win—the one that is peaceful and loving or the one that is angry, agitated and irritable?" The Grandfather wisely tells his grandson that the wolf that prevails will be the one that he feeds. That is, the one on which he places his focus of attention.

This inherent duality and struggle within every one of us is the inherited burden and challenge of humanity—the fourth and middle kingdom of life on our planet. St. Francis of Assisi spoke of the need to discipline brother ass, referring to his lower, personal self in contrast to the higher spiritual Self. The Buddha is often shown on a water buffalo and Jesus is depicted astride a donkey before he enters Jerusalem on Palm Sunday: "See your king comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey." (Zechariah 9:9) The ancient Tibetan Buddhist practice of Chöd, which is gaining popularity in the West offers psychological and spiritual healing by having the individual acknowledge and work with his/her own inner demons and deities. And, the Ageless Wisdom refers to the Dweller on the Threshold that at a certain stage of the evolutionary Path resists and opposes the Solar Angel, bringing much turmoil and continual crises in the life. Thus throughout history and in many different ways, we see depicted the dual nature of wo/man—the higher divine potential that integrates, vitalizes and makes whole and the lesser, personal existence that resists, rebels and creates unrest and war.

One of the essential characteristics of the Age of Aquarius, which is often not alluded to, is the purifying, cleansing energy that accompanies this cycle of planetary experience. It is helpful to remember that Hercules, the forerunner Disciple/Initiate, under the sign of Aquarius took on the labor of cleansing ancient evil from the dung-filled stables of Augeas—yet another symbol or metaphor for the needed purification and redemption of the lesser by the greater.

In the book, Esoteric Astrology, authored by Alice Bailey, the Tibetan Master Dwjhal Khul points out that the rulers of Aquarius bring in the influences of the seventh, second and fourth rays. These, he tells us "are pre-eminently the rays which determine the final stages of man's progress [on the evolutionary Path] as well as the initial stages…They determine the final stages and happenings of the Path of Initiation. The seventh ray brings into expression upon the physical plane the major pairs of opposites—spirit and matter—and relates them to each other, producing eventually one functioning whole. The second ray gives soul expression and spiritual consciousness and also the power to pour out love and wisdom upon earth whilst the fourth ray indicates the field of service and the mode of attaining the goal. This mode or method is that of conflict and struggle in order to reach harmony and thus express all truly human characteristics." (p. 137)

When the spiritual nature is in control, it redeems the lesser, integrating it into a more harmonious, holistic expression. Just as surely as the orchestra conductor can bring harmony out of cacophony, so the Soul, when sought, embraced and given dominion, harmonizes the lesser, conflicting/warring elements.

The essential nature of man can be transmuted by the invocation of better vibrations. Only such a reminder will give man access to a higher status. At the present time humanity is found to be continually in the vibrations of the lower spheres; therefore the lower Manas motivates life. The contact of the Ray of the higher spheres will truly give that vibration which will rouse the consciousness. Perception of the spark of Divine Fire in the seed of the spirit will lay the foundation for a new humanity. Precisely it is necessary to establish in the spiritual structure that in which religion has not succeeded, and to apply to each affirmed manifestation the law of attraction. For realization of the Light in the heart will propel toward the Light, but darkness will dwell in darkness. Thus let us remember on the path to the Fiery World.2

Although many today yearn for peace, the Ageless Wisdom indicates that peace is not the goal of our current planetary experience. Peace, which has relation to the emotional side of life and refers to the world of feeling, was the goal in Atlantean days, when peace was a great spiritual objective. But in our day, peace and the love of peace, according to the Tibetan Master, "can be a deadening soporific." And, "it is usually selfish in purpose...because [people] want to be happy." Instead, the goal of our day is love, leading to right human relations. These when practiced can result in peace and happiness; but, more often than not, they disturb "the equilibrium of matter and material circumstance, and can consequently work against so-called peace."3

This same understanding is echoed in the second volume of the Agni Yoga Society's book, Infinity: "How is the concept of peace apprehended in the human consciousness?...When the Lord said that He brought to Earth not peace but the sword, none understood this great truth. The purification of the spirit by fire is that sword! Can purification be accomplished without striking blows? Is it possible to purify the striving without annihilating the dross? Is it possible to manifest achievement without striving of the spirit? Only the sword which smites egotism can link the spirit to the higher world. The one who rests upon a false peace verily builds self-destruction." (169)

Does this mean that we are not to work to create peaceful conditions and seek to develop a planetary culture of peace? Of course not! For just as we know that the individual emotional body must be brought to a point of mirror-like stillness so as to be governed by the Soul, such is also true of the macrocosmic whole, humanity.

What is required is a deeper understanding and a focus on that which will bring about authentic or true peace.

In the second volume of Supermundane, Master Morya succinctly reminds us, "Until the vices that obstruct peace are eradicated, true peace will not be possible." (319) And, in the book, AUM, he asks, "Can the inhabitants of Earth sleep in peace while somewhere human dignity is abased to a beastlike condition? Can people boast of enlightenment when they know that full rights do not exist?" (418)

The peace that must be sought is a peace based on right relations; a peace that is the natural outcome and expression of a Soul-infused humanity. To further clarify, we know that when the disciple/initiate is striving towards Soul integration, he/she experiences one crisis after another. Obstacles upon obstacles present themselves and all that which does not resonate to the energies of the Soul wreaks havoc in the personal life. From a worldly angle, this person's life may seem in total flux and all that is cherished and held dear in the three worlds may be crashing around him/her; yet, if the mind is held steady in the light of the Soul, if the objective is sought with a singleness of purpose, the depths of his/her life remain undisturbed and he/she becomes as the eye within the storm.

It is towards this "peace which passeth understanding" that humanity is today moving. It is a peace that is independent of outer conditions and one that is based upon spiritual understanding. It is a peace based not on the emotional wish life, but one based on Soul response; a peace that is based on the recognition of the Will-to-Good, which establishes a new rhythm and frequency, as it uplifts the quality of all life.

Just as the Soul creates a great tension in the individual life when it is awakened and begins to radiate its powerful energies into the individual life, so it is for humanity now showered with powerful new solar and planetary energies. If humanity, can accept, realize and assimilate these fiery energies into the daily life, thus purifying and redeeming age-old habits that no longer serve the Common Good, then truly we will be able to co-create the prophesied New Era of brotherhood, understanding and the mind's true liberation. Each of us are called upon to insure the realization of this promise.
