The Will-to-Good and the Age of Aquarius

Not many firm spirits are required to change the perilous situation. A few flaming hearts can rise in self-sacrificing vigil and weave the firm net of defense. Not the supernatural, or magic, simply a flaming aspiration of the heart will unite the worlds.

Heart (475), Agni Yoga Society

Taking a long view of humanity's history on the planet, we can clearly discern a movement towards greater integration and unity—horizontally as humanity has sought to understand the material world of which it is a part and vertically as humanity has sought to understand its subjective and divine nature.

Standing at the midway point between the material side of evolution and pure, divine energy, humanity is a product of the union of the two. According to the Ageless Wisdom, man is "the child born of their marriage or at-one-ment. He assumes objectivity in order to express that which is in each of the two opposites, plus the result of their merging in himself."1 This merging within humanity of the two poles of life gives birth to consciousness which is defined as the faculty of apprehension and concerning primarily, "the relation of the Self to the not-self, of the Knower to the Known, and of the Thinker to that which is thought about."2

In anchoring and providing opportunity for the expression of the Spiritual Self, Divinity or God, humanity also has the opportunity to awaken, enliven and redeem material substance. The process, however, is not automatic, nor is it easy or effortless. As we well know, the attempt to unify and synthesize these diverging but related aspects of life, produces great conflict and marked upheavals—in the personal and the planetary life.

Because Planet Earth is not a sacred planet, the material substance dominates, imprisoning and eclipsing the spiritual life. Inertia, a blind and incessant instinct to maintain the status quo and a powerful self-will that covets supremacy are all characteristics of material substance which opposes and finds antagonistic the life of its opposite pole—the pure energy attempting unification and manifestation. Until a certain degree of Self-consciousness is achieved, the spiritual essence is anathema to the lower planes of evolution.

Yet, planet Earth IS the cosmic turning point, destined to become a sacred planet-not only at the abstract levels of consciousness such as is the case today—but on all levels of expression. Thus, we are assured that the spiritualization of all material substance will eventually become an accomplished fact, as it is an inherent part of the Universal Plan of Love and Light. Spirit and matter are destined to become a synthetic whole and it is in humanity's consciousness that the alchemy will be created. The point in question is one of time. How quickly or slowly can humanity forswear its foolish ways and succeed in throwing the full weight of its conscious, heartfelt dedication and striving into fully merging the two poles of its inherent life? How long will it take humanity to quicken and liberate its own spiritual nature, freeing it from the material substance in which it is encased and thus becoming the destined planetary saviour, applying itself to the achievement of brotherhood, justice, cooperation and goodwill towards all?

The keynote of humanity is harmony through conflict. Conflict is the distinctive characteristic of the material substance that provides the vehicles for the three planes of humanity's personal expression—the physical, emotional and lower concrete mental planes. These three planes of material substance are characterized by and sustained through "fire by friction,"—a process identified by disillusionment, pain, suffering and blind struggle. As this fire-by-friction does its needed purifying work of helping humanity discriminate between the Self and the not-self; between the Real and the unreal, so does humanity move closer to the realms of harmony in which solar and electric fire hold sway. In the East, these frequencies of vibration are referred to as the gunas or fundamental qualities of Tamas, Rajas and Sattva.—qualities respectively of the body (substance), the Soul (Light) and the Spirit (Life).

The promise of this evolving Age of Aquarius is that the energies of solar and electric fire will become more readily available on our planet because the Centers of consciousness from which these energies emanate are drawing closer to our earth humanity. However, just as the sun's rays cannot penetrate a shuttered home, so these energies cannot achieve their beneficent effects if they are not recognized and consciously unfolded.

It is here that the esoteric and spiritual workers of the world are called upon to truly exert themselves as never before. Committed to working towards the salvage of the world, free from all sense of separativeness, full of love for all life and willing to submit themselves to a discipline that will allow for the engendering of the Spiritual Will, these consecrated workers can call forth the needed energy of the will-to-good. They can serve metaphorically as the bellows of old—invoking and evoking this needed fiery energy.

It is only this energy of the will-to-good that can provide the antidote to its opposing shadow—the tenacious and currently ubiquitous will-to separation and aggression—a distortion of the increasingly available energy of the Spiritual Will, emanating from Shamballa—that highest of spiritual centers on our planet.

Just as in Atlantean days when the spiritual energies, subordinated to the selfish desires of the humanity of that day brought an end to that civilization, so today we face a similar potential calamity—on a higher turn of the spiral. Today, the available spiritual energies are in danger of being used and subordinated to the minds and the ambitions of groups with separative agendas who are callously and heartlessly oblivious to the Common Good.

Writing during the time of the second World War, in the book, The Externalization of the Hierarchy, the Tibetan Master, Djwhal Khul, challenged the spiritual workers of the world—a challenge which is as valid today as it was then:

"Must I plead with you to do what you can to heal divisions...Do I need to enjoin the necessity to counteract hate with justice, understanding and mercy?...Do I need to ask for the control of emotions in the general interest and for the consecration of time, energy and money to the enormous task of human salvage?" (p. 442)

He continues, "The Hierarchy [of the Masters of the Wisdom] asks for your aid and your support in the arena of world affairs. ...I ask you now for your cooperation in our mutual responsibility—the helping of humanity." (p. 445)

We are reminded in the teachings of the Agni Yoga Society that just "As the sun is untiring, so shall Agni be inextinguishable!"3 What is Agni but the fiery will-to-good that can burn the dross of the imprisoning walls, dissolving all barriers that would limit, separate and divide that which would be whole? How to end the conflicts, the wars and the injustices on our planet except by recognizing and actualizing the factual truth of the One Humanity; and, how to come to that experience of unity save through the application of this fiery will-to-good?

Originating in Shamballa, the will-to-good is fundamentally an expression of the Law of Sacrifice. Wielded by the Avatar of Synthesis and stepped down by the Christed One—the Planetary Teacher, the will-to-good is available to those of the New Group of World Servers who, aware of their responsibility, identify with the whole. Applying themselves fully and wholeheartedly, these World Servers understand the significance of the words, "Having nothing (sacrifice) and yet possessing all things (universality)."4

Acting as intermediaries between the 5th Kingdom of the Hierarchy of Love-Wisdom and the 4th Kingdom of Humanity, this group is uniquely related to the Avatar of Synthesis. Their task it is to cultivate the will-to-good and to thus insure the ushering in of the New Age of Aquarius.

It is through three major groups that the will-to-good can be expressed:

  • Within the spiritual Hierarchy,
  • Within the Assembly of the United Nations, slowly developing a growing will-to-unity, and
  • With the masses everywhere, fostering the urge to a general betterment.
  • As points of crises in the personality life provide transforming opportunities, so conflict and crises in our present humanity can initiate new cycles of Being and of consciousness. Vigilance to the opportunities presented is called for as is the willingness to forego that which would obstruct the forward march to progress (wholeness). The Hierarchy of the Masters of the Wisdom and the Great Lords of Liberation within Shamballa are attentive to all that occurs on planet Earth and within the consciousness of Humanity. They do not interfere with the free will of humanity, but they will aid when called upon. Let the call go forth.5 As Above, so Below!

4The root meaning of "to sacrifice" is to make whole. In the book, The Rays and the Initiations, the Tibetan Master, Djwhal Khul affirms that technically, sacrifice "is the achievement of a state of bliss and of ecstasy because it is the realisation of another divine aspect, hidden hitherto by both the soul and the personality." p. 492.
