Freedom from Fear, The UN and the World Wide Esoteric Community
"The living organism of aspirants and
disciples can provide a centre of peace, power and
love, of practical help and spiritual uplift such as
the world has not hitherto seen.
Good evening friends. Welcome and thank you for being here to help us honor a marking point in the history of humanity and our planet. As many of you know, it was 57 years ago, on April 25, 1945, two days previous to the Wesak Festival of that year, that delegates from 50 nations met in San Francisco for a conference known officially as the United Nations Conference on International Organization. (In 1945 the three Spiritual Festivals fell on March 28th, April 27th and May 26th)
Before moving into our theme for tonight, "Freedom from Fear," I would like to briefly share some history about this initiative that we refer to as "The Spiritual Work of the United Nations and the Liberation of Humanity," as we too have arrived at a humble marking point of our own. It was in the fall of 1998 that a small group of us came together to initiate this work. We were very much aware of the then imminent planetary event, in the year 2000. That is, the release of energy into our planet from Shamballa-that highest spiritual center, which in cooperation with other Cosmic Beings, holds in trust our planet's purpose and its evolution.
Recognizing that the General Assembly of the United Nations is impacted by energies streaming from Shamballa, we wanted to do what we could to support the goals and principles of this planetary experiment-often referred to as "the hope of humanity." Also, we wanted to bring attention and recognition to the spiritual nature of the United Nations, also referred to-at least, at this point in time-as "humanity's most far-sighted and significant undertaking."
Since that time in the fall of 1998, we've held two symposia within the United Nations Headquarters, as well as several other roundtable and public meetings. On May 18-the Wesak Festival in the year 2000, we held a public roundtable under the theme of "The Eternal Plan of Love and Light & The Work of the United Nations." We sought to emphasize the direct relationship that exists between the realization of the Plan of Love and Light for our times and the successful work of the UN.
The public monthly meditation meetings began shortly after this roundtable and last year at the Wesak Festival, we began to focus on the work of the UN in context of the initiating impulse to implement the Four Freedoms on a planetary scale.
As the theme of this initiative and meditation outline indicates, the spiritual work of the United Nations and the "liberation of humanity" go hand in hand. In this Aquarian Age, the UN is as a Temple for Humanity. The work accomplished within and around this world body by its personnel, by the representatives and leaders of the member States and by many of the 1400 plus Civil Society organizations affiliated with the UN are undertaking truly spiritual work.
Contrary to the past two thousand years of the Piscean Age when spirituality was equated with religion and with a religiously oriented outer structure such as a church or synagogue, spirituality in our Aquarian Age is recognized to encompass the whole of life. A forest is sacred, as is a dedicated space within one's home, as is the UN's goal to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom for all the world's people.
Contrary to the Piscean Age when communion with divinity was possible only through an appointed individual or group who acted as a spiritual conduit, in this Aquarian Age, we know that each of us-not only can be-but MUST be the keepers of our own individual flame.
An ancient aphorism indicates that the eye sees what it brings to the seeing. The most exalted Being imaginable could be standing in front of us and if we had not done the necessary transformative work within ourselves, if we had not cleansed the lenses of perception, we would be oblivious to the energies carried by such a great Being or the benefit that He or She might bring. As the Buddha and other great Teachers indicated, they can point the way, but each person, individually must tread the Path. Each individual must attain the various stages of Enlightenment and Self-Realization by undertaking the hard work of transmutation, transformation and transfiguration on his or her own.
In the book, Education in the New Age, the Tibetan Master, Djwhal Khul teaches that "The spirit of man is undying; it forever endures, progressing from point to point and stage to stage upon the Path of Evolution, unfolding steadily and sequentially the divine attributes and aspects" (p. 1). Today we recognize that illumination is a mental process and not necessarily a religious one.
"God can be known by His works," states the Tibetan Master, "and these works can [often] be more easily appreciated through the revelations of science than by the hymns, prayers and sermons of the churches throughout the world." (pp. 55/7)
At its inception, it was hoped that the UN would implement the eight points of the Atlantic Charter and the Four Freedoms declared by Franklin Roosevelt-on a global scale, thus granting people everywhere the right to free speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want and freedom from fear.
These four freedoms, emblazoned within the UN Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, relate basically to the four aspects of the personal self. Their successful attainment would lead to an integration within the collective humanity and to such a transformed physical and psychological planetary environment that the longed for culture of peace could then begin and the promise of liberation or initiation, for the many in this Aquarian Age could then be realized.
Freedom from fear as designated by President Roosevelt and as currently considered by the UN refers to a world-wide reduction of armaments to such a point and in such a thorough fashion that no nation will be in a position to commit an act of physical aggression against any neighbour-anywhere in the world.
Can we imagine such a state? Can we visualize such a longed-for possibility?
Addressing this freedom from fear, Article I of the Charter states that one of the major purposes of the UN is "to maintain international peace and security" and "to take effective collective measures for the prevention and removal of threats to the peace." Article two states that "All Members shall settle their international disputes by peaceful means in such a manner that international peace and security, and justice, are not endangered." And so on.
However, we know that such is NOT the case and we need to ask, how many more Rwandas, Srebrenicas, Chechnyas, Afghanistans, Ramallahs, Jenins, NewYorks, and so forth, can humanity tolerate?! When will humanity declare that enough is enough and begin the necessary change?
In his Millennium address to the General Assembly, Secretary-General, Kofi Annan pointed out that the structural weaknesses of UN peace operations are a direct responsibility of the member states. And, only they can make the needed changes, which will allow the UN to fulfill its Charter mandate to attain freedom from fear.
The UN's system for launching peacekeeping operations has sometimes been likened to a volunteer fire department. However, Mr. Annan points out that even "that description is too generous." He goes on, "every time there is a fire, we must first find fire engines and the funds to run them before we can start dousing any flames."
Also, as we know, any peacekeeping mission must be authorized by all five of the permanent Security Council members. If one member vetoes the mission, the mission is aborted. And this is exactly what has happened in this latest Middle East crisis.
Because of the violence on both sides, many nation States as well as the Secretary General wanted to authorize the sending in of a multinational peacekeeping force formed by a coalition, as he put it, "of the willing." This, as Mr. Annan pointed out, is mandated under Chapter Seven of the UN Charter, which authorises the use of military force to impose Council decisions. He further went on to say-what we well know-that the situation in the Middle East is so dangerous that the international community has an obligation to provide this assistance.
However, one of the five permanent members of the Security Council vetoed the idea and we have all witnessed the resulting carnage and suffering over the past many weeks.
In this instance as in so many others, the Spiritual objectives and goals of the UN as set forth in the Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, are held hostage to the short-sighted desires of the member States, who in turn reflect the mandate of their citizens.
In the book, The Reappearance of the Christ, the Tibetan Master writes, "Speaking symbolically-when the United Nations has emerged into factual and actual power, the welfare of the world will then be assured. What is that welfare but love in action? What are right human relations but love among men, groups and nations? What is international cooperation but love on a world scale?" (p. 50)
Thus as is the case in all aspects of life at this transitional period within the dawn of the Aquarian Age, the vision hearkens; it calls, but the necessary hard work of implementation and realization awaits the will of the workers.
Herein lies the challenge and opportunity for the world wide esoteric community.
As we know, in any conflict the real issue is always in the field of consciousness. If we thus understand the present struggle from its subjective causes, then we can help humanity make real progress in moving from the narrowness of the present situation into a more enlightened future. The struggle in this intermediate period is between progress, leading to the liberation of the human spirit, and reactionary activity, leading to the imprisonment of the human consciousness and the restriction of its free expression.
Evolution ever tends towards expansion. Thus, all life takes the form of a progressive series of awakenings. Progress, movement, awakening, expansion, enlightenment, evolution, growth-these are but a few of the concepts applied to the effects, both within and without, of the evolutionary creative process.
What drives evolution but the progressive demonstration of what humanity refers to as the will of God and what esotericists know to be the Purpose of Sanat Kumara-and the Custodians of the Will within Shamballa, who in turn respond to even more exalted extra-planetary Beings and energies?
Through past civilisations and their eventual destruction, our planetary Logos has gradually prepared the field for the future destiny of humanity, which is currently in the fifth of the seven major phases of its intended unfoldment. Over the millennia, as it demonstrated readiness, humanity has been initiated into succeeding phases of divine consciousness through applied stimulation.
And, today we are, as they say, "in the thick of it." Not only has the world experienced the release of energy from Shamballa in the year 2000. But, additionally, as students of the Tibetan Master know, last year-as every 49-year period-was the time of decision for the Masters of the sixth degree-decisions which when made, hasten the evolution of life. Additionally, the Aquarian influence, which is just beginning, with its emphasis on universality and synthesis, produces mainly the intensifying of the hierarchical relationship to Shamballa.
These events create increased and far-ranging crises for humanity. For such is ever the result of the unleashing or application of this Shamballic energy. All good aspirations and synchronous high vibrations are stimulated. However, also stimulated is that which we term "evil" or of a regressive nature. It produces a stimulation of the will-to-serve the Plan of Love and Light, but conversely, it produces in certain nations, groups and individuals, a welling up of the self-will or the personal will-to-power which is characteristic of the developed lower nature.
According to the Old Commentary, this Shamballa energy, "fans or intensifies the light by the removal of obstructions and proceeds from far distant places, pouring through the eye of illumination into those spheres of influence upon the sorrowful planet, Earth." (Esoteric Astrology, p. 376)
Thus, the current crisis. As we know from our own direct experience, as difficult and as "earth shattering" as these may be, crises do serve as great spiritual opportunities, challenging us to move forward, towards expanded consciousness and ever closer to our own inner divinity.
In conjunction with the energy of love, this Shamballa energy will bring about that tremendous second crisis for the human race-the crisis of initiation into the Mystery of the Ages. However, this graded work of preparation for initiation cannot take place until there is a measure of stability, of peace and a sharing of resources on the planet.
It is for this reason that the full expression of all ashramic energy at this time is directed to practical world affairs and to the education of the general public about the Plan of Love and Light. And, it is for this reason that the United Nations plays such a pivotal role in the liberation of humanity.
Seeking to understand world issues and holding in our mind an understanding of these subjective causes behind the outer events of our day is helpful as such an understanding augments the energies of lighted intelligence and love-wisdom on our planet.
Additionally, we can seek to fit ourselves and cooperate as a group with this Shamballic intention. We can attempt a better understanding of the spiritual Will, learning to distinguish between the expression of a fixed and potent desire, arising as a solar plexus expression and the wielding of the spiritual Will.
The secret of the spiritual Will lies in the recognition of the divine nature of humanity; it is evoked by the Soul as it dominates the human mind and controls the personal self. The secret of this Will is also closely tied in with the recognition of the unconquerable nature of goodness and the inevitability of the ultimate triumph of good.
Desire works from and through the material form upwards; the spiritual Will works downwards into form, bending form consciously to divine purpose. When evoked, such a Will ends desire and becomes an immanent, propulsive, driving force, stabilising, clarifying, and finally destroying all impediments.
It is this Will released by Shamballa-that place of "serene determination and of poised, quiescent will" which we can invoke and learn to focus in the light of the soul for the purpose of establishing right human relations within our lives and within the planet.
Finally, at least for our purposes here tonight, we can see to it that we are not a focal point for hate, separation, fear, pride and some of the other characteristics that today feed the fires that are bringing untold disaster throughout the world. We can be more mindful and bring a more concerted intention to the use of our thought power.
In the first volume of Fiery World, Master Morya indicates that "If we look on our planet from above, we will observe, besides the evident volcanoes, particular vortices of light and darkness." He goes on, "The human spirit can create powerful manifestations of energy. One may state that the vortices of Light are saviors of the equilibrium of the planet. Nor is it far from the truth to state that the vortices of darkness contain a destructive gas, which is not only deadly to the crust of the planet but can alter the climate and even significantly effect a shifting of the poles. …Powerful is the significance of the human spirit!" (664)
And, in the book, Hierarchy, he further affirms, "Thoughts become a defensive net for humanity. Only these luminous emanations give the strength to withstand the darkness. Hence it is so important to stratify space with words of the heart, they contain light. Thus humanity is uplifted upon the wings of thought. Thus evolution is being built." (105)
With these thoughts in mind, can we now apply ourselves to our mediation and do our part to uplift humanity?
A talk given by Ida Urso, Ph.D., on April 26, 2002 at the
monthly meditation meeting on the work of the UN.
The concept of "The Liberation of Humanity by the United Nations" is put forth by the Tibetan Master in the book, Esoteric Healing, by Alice A. Bailey, pp. 261/2.
